if i buy a fiat 126 bis, is it simple to retro fit the air cooled engine from an earlier car, there seems to be much more tuning options for the air cooled version

Unlikely as the Bis engine is like the Fiat 500 estate engine in that it is turned on its side through 90 degrees so it fits under the rear floor. The gearbox bellhousing is different to match this rotation although an aircooled 126 bellhousing will fit onto a Bis gearbox and you may be able to put an aircooled engine into a Bis if the top of the engine will fit into the hole in the Bis rear floor. Noisy. The starter motor and engine mounting are different. I have some 126 parts in Cheshire if you decide to go ahead.
