POP-up headlights a thing of the past???

The 2005 Corvette has been revealed and it has lost it's pop up headlights. Looks like they have been replaced by HID units. Could this be the end for pop-up headlights?

While they look good when down, they are ugly when up. Also, there are parts that add weight, and fail over time, especially in climates where ice can form and prevent operation.

Yeah, I know most Vette drivers don't take their cars out in adverse weather, but some do or get caught out in it, and the car needs to be designed to handle those situations.

Yeah, I'll miss the hidden lamps, but I don't mind the headlight look if done right.

I'll agree they add weight and can be mechnical nightmares at times but the lack of them also seems to be the most controversial part of the new styling of the new vette.

Got a link to the 'Vette picture?

I waited two generations (of 'Birds, that is) for GM to make the car sexier than gen 2, an they did it by hiding the headlights. The clean look, in the daytime, was what I was after. So what if the 'Bird or 'Vette appears to be wearing glasses at night to see? My second car (which I still wish I still had) was a '67 Mercury Cougar. "Glasses at night"......not a chance! That, too, was one sexy machine with hidden headlights. Only problem with the FoMoCo products having this feature was the occasional loss of vacuum causing the covers to drop back into the 'daytime' position. That can be a bit unnerving at 75-80 mph going up a mountain or canyon highway.

As for the "weight" issue.....what are we talking about, 5-15 pounds? Unless I'm running a strip or circuit I wouldn't be concerned about it.

If you buy a Corvette, get used to finicky things. Corvettes are finicky by nature :).

I'd take my 2nd generation bird over the 3rd gens any day :). I don't like cars with corporate power. I want what I've paid for (Pontiac with a Pontiac engine :) ).

I think the popups on the Vette are cool, because a Vette usually sees only good weather. Joe--ASE Certified Parts Specialist & 10th Ann.Club Tech Director '80 Carousel Red Turbo T/A, 26k orig. . The car actually looks pretty good but I do wish they had kept the pop-ups. And I would have to agree they don't hide that much weight.

Here's a side to side(or should I say top to bottom) comparison

Thanks for the link!

Nice Site!

Head on, the new 'Vette appears to have slanted eyes and smiling (not trying to start any ethnic wars here, as I'm Japanese-Irish). From the side by side comparison with the C5, C6 looks fat.

Concealed headlamps would still look better.

When was it, '63 or '64 that Chevy hid the lights? Must have been '64....Corvette would have been ten years old at the time. 40 years of hiding the illumination is pretty darn good. Then, again, 50+ years of continuous production for a model.............phenomenal! If GM keeps things alive with the 'Vette, the model will beat out the "Bug".

I agree.

'62. I believe they came out with the Stingray in '63, or maybe it was '63

1/2.

I used to want a Vette badly. I have an '85 Z-28 TPI that I really enjoy. I rode a couple of hundred miles one day in a friend's '92 Vette convertible. No luggage room. Noisy. Rode worse than my Z-28. Faster, but not hugely faster. Sexier, yes.

Practical to drive to work? Not really. Even my old Camaro was stolen from my work parking lot in Dec. '01. Fortunate to get it back--sans stereo, tools, G-Tech, sub-woofer etc.

I still may have a Vette someday. Hopefully a C5, since they address most of the problems I noticed in the C4. We'll see. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy the Camaro, and when the engine goes, I'll drop in a little beefier one. Cheap thrills.

Ooohhhhh! What a slap at the collective GM design team! Plagiarizing the competition while providing subtle differences...........

That's funny, I took it as a reason to buy a 'bird over a Camaro. ;o)

I was half-kidding, I really only bought my 'bird because my brother was selling. Otherwise I'd probably still be a one-vehicle man.

In hindsight though, I'm glad my brother was selling a GTA and not a Z28. ;o)

Don't get me wrong... I love birds too. My personal taste prefers the way the lights are on my 2001 Camaro over a pop up type. I would prefer that even the Vette have fixed lights as well. It's just a taste thing though. Lots of people like popups better or at least hink they look cooler.
