2003 explorer eddie bauer axle whine

I have a 2003 ford explorer eddie bauer v6 with 12,700 miles on it. When i'm driving on the highway at 50 miles or so I hear like a whining noise coming from the rear axle.I only hear this noise when i'm pressing down the gas pedal. When i go below 50 mph it goes away. Does anyone have the same thing happening to them? Is this a thing thats covered under warranty? Did anyone have this fixed?

Thanks in advance

Hi, I have a '02 Eddie Bauer V8 with the same symptoms. I now have 43,000 mi. and may have to depend on dealer/Ford's goodwill. :(

This is a known issue with some of the vehicles. It invovles premature wearing of the bearings in the rear differential. I have read that Ford has replaced the bearings without argument on vehicles still under warranty. I have also read of Ford replacing this on vehicles out of warranty as well if you can complain to the right person. I just rolled over 38,500 miles and still no whine so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it won't affect my vehicle.

I have had this happen with my 2002 Explorer -- they say it is a drive shaft that is not under recall, but is a "Mechanic's Advisory" (or something like that). Mine is out of warranty, 48,000, and they say it'll be $475.00 to replace it -- but I can keep driving and it'll not be a problem, I am told. I have already had problems with other rear end components and have pretty much had all that replaced while under warranty. My siste-rin-law has a

2002 she bought new and is starting to have rear-end problems also. I think it is a problem with this newer type of rear end system they have put in, and I feel that they should be recalling these problematic parts. Good luck.

I have a 2004 with the same problem. They replaced the rear axle. I told them about the noise - no questions asked - they knew exactly what the problem was.

That was 2 month ago - the problem is - its's back!

2004 XLT here. same rear end whine that drives me nuts. Only 6500 K on it...Starts to whine at about 90KPH... or 55 MPH. Good thing it's leased!. Ford can have their piece of crap back at the end of the lease. Going to seriously look at another manufacturer next time.
