IAT on 94 4.0l Pushrod V6 VIN X

I am posting this question again. My Ford Service Manual saids that I have a IAT Sensor. Inlet Air Temperature.

I have looked and do not see it. The only place I can think it might be is on the bottom half of the air filter section of the air intake housing. That is the only area that is somewhat obscured and I have not looked thoroughly there.

I am hoping to hear from someone who has personally seen on of these sensors on their 94 Explorer.

Thanks,

Just pull the upper part off the airfilter housing, pull the element out and you can look inside if its there you will see it

come to think of it, isn't the iat located on the upper intake, behind t-body ????????

Just off the top of my head I seem to recall it's in the air cleaner housing somewhere (on either my '91, '92, or both) and I think you need to pull out the air cleaner element to see it. I'll take a look later--I just discovered that my wife managed to knock my battery out of it's holder this morning. She must have been doing some jumps with my Explorer again :-|

It turns out that what I was thinking of was the so-called "bimetal sensor" that is a vacuum control that controls whether the hot air from the engine goes in the intake or the cold air from outside. My Hayne's manual shows that the IAT is located somewhere in the front, left near the battery and air cleaner. But the description of it says it's "threaded into a runner of the intake manifold." I suspect it may be the device that's screwed into the intake manifold just in front of the vacuum cluster and has two wires going to it. I also suspect that if it was not working properly you would get a CEL and error code 24 or 54 or 112, 113, or 114.

I have searched all along the air intake tube and see no sensor. I do see the bimetal sensor. Upon further examination I have located a senor with 2 wires going in to it that is screwed into the upper intake area on the driver side close to the firwall. I have a Haynes Manual and a Ford Service Manual and NEITHER one of the IAT Sensor located on the Upper Intake area. I have been having a little trouble finding accurate info for my engine which is a 4.0l pushrod v-6.

In my fact finding mission I find it extremely necessary to know the location of every sensor. That is why I am posting so many questions about this sensor because this is the only sensor I am having a difficult time finding correct information on.

Thanks for your help. I am going to assume that there is no way the sensor that I am talking about on the upper intake assembly could be a coolant temperature sensor because there is no coolant flowing through the upper intake assembly. The only sensor that I can think it would be is the "mysterious" IAT Sensor !!

Thanks for you reply. I welcome anyone with any more facts reference the IAT Sensor location on my 94 4.0l Pushrod V6.

Sam, see the picture of the harness I posted to your other thread. The IAT is #20 on the picture.

Good luck,

Steven

I let me wife drive my car one day after spending a couple of hours washing/waxing, detailing the wheels, etc only to have her come home and the front tires had mud all over them. When asked she had no idea where it came from. I am not talking about a little dirt on the tires that were armor alled...I am talking about a physicall accumilation of mud that had dried on the tires and wheels.

There is no way it's a coolant sensor on the upper intake manifold (throttle body). There is a coolant sensor mounted next to the thermostat. The one on the upper intake must be the IAT and that's what I thought I said (maybe I 'd better re-read what I posted). I was merely sharing the information in the Hayne's manual in case it revealed some clues and trying to point out that there was a discrepancy in their instructions. The problem, the way I see it, is to rule out the misinformation but first we have to determine which is correct.

Does this read 4.0 "one" or 4.0 "L" ? If it is a 4.0"one" then it may be different but the usual designation for this engine is 4.0L.

rect.

The font on my newsgroup reader indicates l as a lowercase "L". It designates 1 as such. I am used to my font. Sorry if you caught it :)

You are as anal as I am and that is a good thing because it is the tiny details that are usually overlooked and can sometimes turn out to be the biggest factors! It is great to a does of my own medicine!!

Thanks

I wasn't trying to be "anal" as you call it, just making sure it's the same engine. If it was software 4.01 would be a different version ;-)

I know there were a few minor changes from '91 to '92 because I have one of each but it seems unlikely they would move the IAT sensor on the '94.

Hey nothing mean or vulgar was meant by what I said. I appreciate you helping me by replying. Your reply just made me laugh kind of since I found your answer to be correct and I was in error which is something that I do sometimes and mean nothing by it. I hope you take it in the spirit in which it was intended.

Thanks for your input and I look forward to chatting with you in the future.

Huh? Sorry if I sounded offended--I wasn't. I've been called a lot of things and being called "anal" certainly isn't one of the worst ;-)

I am somewhat of a recluse and I don't watch TV, listen to radios, or read the newspaper or magazines so some popular expressions are not familiar to me.

The main thing here is that we all get our Explorers fixed and running properly.
