My '98 Mountaineer is paid off, in excellent condition and only has 63K on the clock but I really wanted a newer Explorer/Mountaineer/Aviator. I couldn't justify taking on a new payment when what I have is fine. So I did the next best thing and convinced my fiance to get one. She wanted an SUV anyways so it wasn't a hard sale. We settled on a silver demo Explorer Limited. It has the V8. With my Mountaineer the V8 option takes 4WD options away from you but I do remember that when I had my V6 Explorer that it was in 4x2 mode under most circumstances. The new one gives you three options and the dealer tells me that unless I choose one it is in AWD. This confused me as I thought that was one of the three buttons I could press. He also told me that there is no 4x2 mode. I won't get it for a couple of days so I wanted to know my answer before I pick it up. Which is it? Are there really four modes and none is 4x2?
