96 3.0 and computer in 97 Taurus SHO

Got a great deal or so I thought when I purchased a 97 Taurus. It had tranny problems but the price for the car was worth putting in a new tranny or so I thought. The previous owner put a 3.0l v6 in the car instead of a 3.4l v8. He changed the computer and the motor runs great, but the tranny shifting is all wrong. I took the car to a tranny specialist but because the vin number on the car does not match what is stored in the computer they are not able to view any info. Is there any numbers on the motor that might match it to the vin# of the car it ws removed from? If the tranny is the wrong type for the motor how can I tell. If I buy a new computer with an associated vin# and tranny to match the 3.0l will it work?

I have to figure this is a AX4N trans & 3.0 Duratec? (changing a AX4N to AX4S/AXOD or vice-versa is a daunting task without 2 complete vehicles, & the 3.4 always has the AX4N)

I would go to eBay and "borrow" a VIN from a car for sale that matches the year, engine & trans you have now, and use that VIN to get the calibration correct... it MIGHT work...
