Had temporary blow by problem 283

An old 283 (290?) 4bbl in a 65 pick up had bad blow-by / ran very rough last fall with some gray smoke out the oil cap (not antifreeze). Next spring it ran great after sitting all winter, except the rear seal is now blown due to blow by it seems. Any idea why the problems would go away? Dave

Yeah, meant 289. Not mine, can't recall 290/289. There was a swap out ran it occasionally that summer before it blew. Some valve noise too. Don't know where engine was- rust could be from air cleaner/carb work or someone put a head on a planter. Engine ran OK for 2 months. It works now think we'll run the crap out of it on the driveway so seals wont leak and see if worth fixing seals.
