250 - Differences

I have been tinkering with buying a 250, and have even started to look at them a bit. What I'd like is a 1998+, crew cab, powerstroke, 4x4...

What is the difference, if any, if it's a "Super Duty"?

What's the difference, if any, between the sticker on the rear that reads "4x4" vs. one that reads "FX4"?

Thanks,

Dob

PS I'm sure I'll be back with a few more "real" questions... ;-)

98 was the last year of the old body style on the F-250/350 models. Nothing wrong with those old trucks and they are plenty heavy duty.

"Super Duty" is mostly just a tag line. The trucks were redesigned for 99 and do have upgrades from the earlier years. This is also when the new modular gas engines were added. (The V-10 is a pretty good engine offering decent mileage.) There was also a lighter duty 250 in

99 only. It looks just like the F-150 but was up-rated for 3/4 ton duties. (I'd skip the light 250.)

FX4 is an "off-road" package. It does offer some upgrades to enhance off-road activity, but as I recall reading, it isn't that impressive. (Stickers and different shocks?! OK, maybe a bit more, but not much.) I wouldn't let it being or not being an FX4 be a deciding factor in your purchase.

Thanks Matt. Thanks for pointing out the typo, "1998", I do want the new body style. I did find the FX4 "upgrades" to include "better" shocks, skid plates on fuel tank and tranny, and a different tire/wheel package. I see some advertised with Super Duty & some not. Just curious if there was anything worth noting. Dob
