F-250 - Diesel Maintenance?

I have managed to talk myself into wanting a F-250 Diesel, (crew, 4X4), used.

The gassers out there seem to take great pleasure in ribbing oilers about maintenance. In the real world, what are the major maintenance differences?

Seems I saw that the gas swaps oil at about 6 quarts, and the diesel at about 15... (Probably not the actual numbers, but, for illustration purposes...)

Additional oil, plus you will need to change fuel filters more often than with gas. Doesn't seem to be that big of a deal to me. I own a gas powered 2004 F-150 so I do not have any direct experience with a diesel.

If you drive it 350Kmi, you will pay a few hundred dollars more for filters and oil. They will pay more for Fuel, rods, bearings, valves etc.

Plus, they get to listen to the radio!

I get the oil filters 2/$6.00 FRAM or 2/$5.00 Penzoil on coupon specials at Schucks,Checker, Kragen or Pepboys. I stock up whan the specials are on. The FRAM is reg $9.97 Motorcraft $ 9.49 @ Walmart.

Walmart 15W-40 oil (apparently "Kendall") is about $4.44 a gallon so my oil changes ( I do my own) run:

4.44 X 3.5 = $ 15.50 plus filter @ 3.00 = $18.50 I do this every 5000 miles and grease the 4 (only) grease nipples under there. That is important. The ball joints on these are subject to failure if not greased regularly.

The fuel filter (RACOR) ordered over the internet for about $ 13.00 only need changing (easy to do) every 30,000 or so..No biggie. Ours is a 2002 F350 Lariat crewcab that we use to haul our 34' 5th wheel and its been great. Already have over 50,00 miles on it and no problems so far. The tank holds 40 gal and diesel here is 56 cents/gal cheaper than gas so I save over $ 22.00 a tank. I like that !

Thanks guys, I wasn't sure if there was much past oil & filters... I expect to drive it for MANY miles - I currently drive a 1990 (dare I say...) Jeep with 424,789 miles on it. Original tranny, engine overhaul (well, $1200 worth) at

190k. Damn thing won't die. Yup, it's the 4.0. The F-250 is a little more truck than I need, right now. I do haul my Yanmar 2210 around a little, would be a little more, and farther with a bigger truck. And, I have my sights set on a power cat (amaran), which is when the need for the extra umph will be needed. Plus when I haul, I prefer to do it "easily", not pushing the limits... I would do my own maintenance as well, so sounds like it's no big deal. If I can roll out 400k on a Jeep 4.0, I oughta get 1m+ out of a diesel... ;-) One more thing of note, the folks that were/are leaving Florida - they ran out of gas at the pumps, seems like the only thing available was diesel - one more reason! Thanks again. Dob

While the engine may in fact last over 500k, the trans and all those electronic gizmos will not likley fare nearly as well.

Noted. The rear wiper/washer, cruise control, and maybe something else don't work on the Jeep. Plus it has a few other idiosyncrasies that I am familiar with (which don't bother me), that make me hesitant for others to drive... Dob

Learn how to check your glow plugs. It is not difficult and a well maintained glow plug system will ensure good starts. Glow plugs about $10 a piece. I have one cylinder that eats glow plugs, they only last about six months.

heh. Had a 4.0L in an old AMC Hornet I used to deliver pizza in a while back. Put over 50,000k hard miles on it, and dern thing still ran good when I sold it.

But then, I know of a 2.3L in a '76 Pinto that recently turned 350,000 on nothing but regular maintenance. It was one big factor as to why I bought my Ranger with a 2.3L.

They should last alot longer than that are you using Autolites or Champions? Motorcraft or Bosch are the only way to go. Also they may be cycling for to long.

Sorry for the delay, been working alot of hours lately.

I use the motorcraft. I had the system checked by a pro, he had no answer for the repeat offender either.
