Any recommendations on a spare tire lock for my F150? [Us@ cod@ to @-mail m@]

A colleagues spare tire got stolen from under the truck. The thief simply lowered the tire--I assume using his own truck's crank handle--, cut the steel cable...

I am seeing the following being advertised on internet:

Any of you using one of them and happy with it?

Thanks!

I bought the one that Ford sells for (if I remember, right) around $20. They install a locking mechanism inside, where the crank connects to the winch. Then, you get a "key" (a cylinder with an end that matches up to the lock) that you put at the end of the crank before you put it into the access point. Unless they match up, the winch isn't turning. It worked great for several years.

Last year, I went to work, using the expressway for about 12 miles. Upon turning into the driveway at work, I heard a thunk and didn't know what it was. Upon walking to my office, I saw my spare tire laying in the driveway. The cable had snapped. This was after almost 7 years of Chicago weather (read: winter salt).I only had occasion to lower the spare twice in that time. I didn't want to think what could have happened if it had occurred on the expressway, at speed.

My spare is now in the bed of my truck, under the camper top.

Good luck!
