Anything new of Cruise Control recall fix?

A couple of months ago, I called the dealer about the final fix for the 2000 model F-150 cruise control switch. He stated a fix was not out yet for the

150 and I would be notified. It has been a long time, has anyone heard anything or had the final fix completed? Or has Ford just dropped it?

Thanks, Clark

I'm located in Trenton, Ontario, Canada and I just got a card in my mail yesterday from Ford Canada that says, "In October 2005, we mailed you a letter announcing Safety Recall 05S28 (Speed Control System Modification). At that time, the service part was not yet available to complete the recall. Beginning late January, 2006, your dealer will be able to order the service part for your vehicle. We urge you to contact your dealer in late January to schedule an appointment to have the new service part installed." So, you should be getting something very similar in the mail very soon.

I also got a card from Ford last month (L.I., Nu Yawk) that stated along the lines that the repair part that was supposed to be available to the dealer by November was unfortunately not going to be available until March 06, and that if I haven't had my cruise control disconnected yet, I should visit a dealer ASAP and have it done.

I don't know about anyone else, but I did have the disconnect done. I cannot afford taking time off work for two separate trips to the dealer. I check the master cylinder once a month to make sure it's not dripping any fluid on the wires, and it's clean and as dry as a bone. It's been fine for

7 years, so I think it'll be fine for a few more months. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't panic at recalls....

I meant that I did NOT have the disconnect done...Sorry...

Thanks for the responses, I have received nothing except a "come see us for service" solicitation, so I know they still have my address ;).

I am really surprised Ford hasn't redesigned the switch to move off the master cylinder to perhaps the brake light switch or something that will not start fires.

If the fires are being started by fluid getting on the wires, which are above the cylinder, I am fine also. I just assumed the switch itself was getting hot and creating the fires, maybe I misunderstood. I guess one large thing to think about would be, that IF the thing caught fire, I suppose insurance might not pay since a notification had been made. So I have mine disconnected--easy to do.

The information reported on the news was that the leak was internal to the switch. When the internal part of the switch allows fluid to contact the electrical part of the switch the possibility of fire exists. That is how disconnecting the power source from the switch prevents the fire danger. The leak is not visible and has nothing to do with fluid getting on the wires.

I guess I read it too quick few months back. Now I'm confused. Can somebody post a link that has the info? What fluid is internal to the switch? I thought I read it was brake fluid that dripped or leaked and found it's way into the switch. Guess I'm wrong, so I'd like to be informed.

Thanks, Scott

As well as that, I am curious about the fix. The Ford web site has the mini-movie showing the fix involves placing a fused wire between at switch and the wire harness. The dealer says it is a whole new switch that gets installed. I figure I'll find out for sure when mine gets fixed hopefully the end of this month.

I grabbed this from

formatting link
FROM THE CNN ARTICLE:

"The $20.57 switch shuts off the cruise control when the driver firmly steps on the brakes. The switch is located under the hood of the vehicle and is attached to the brake master cylinder on one end and wired to the cruise control on the other.

"On most of its models, Ford designed the switch to be powered -- or "hot" -- at all times, even when the vehicle is off and the key is removed from the ignition.

"Inside the switch, a thin film barrier separates brake fluid from the switch's electrical components. Investigators say fires can occur when the film cracks and brake fluid from the master cylinder seeps into the electrical side of the switch."

2002 FX4 - Went to the dealer for an oil change. They disconnected the cruise control, and told me the fix would arrive in February. Probably need another oil change buy then, so they can fix it at the same time. Ron

The dealer disconnected mine without asking when I had a timing cover gasket replaced. Is this mandatory? I wish they hadn't until they had the part. Couldn't I just sign a waiver saying I don't care if my truck blows up I want my cruise control? My truck is a 94 F-150. I had heard about the recall when I took the truck it but I didn't think it applied to such an old year. Again, was it mandatory legally or something?

I must be one of the lucky ones unless there is an even newer recall on it. Got my card also last year for my 2000 model which the cruise had already quit working on. Since I had other extended warranty issues also at the time(door locks) they fixed them and did the recall at the same time. This was back in beginning of Nov when it was done and they stated they had a few of the recall parts available. When I got it home it had a new sensor/switch in the master cylinder and a new pigtail in-between the sensor/switch connector and the trucks harness. It looks to be just a pigtail connector they put in between the two..... I guess having an issue with a non-working cruise when it came in might have bumped up the part install on my truck.........

There is a fix for the fix. I had my original switch replaced in the manner you describe, but I suppose they had problems with those also. I think the first fix was just a replacement switch and the pigtail you see is to make it compatible with the wiring.

Second fix doesn't seem to be ready yet, but hopefully soon.

I just got the second notice informing me that the fix for my truck (99 F150) is in and that I should make an appointment to have the work done. I was surprised that it came so soon.

I just got mine fixed this morning. The fix for mine was just the new wiring harness. I asked about the switch itself and it would appear that Ford is only replacing the switch if it appears to be leaking. Otherwise you just get the wire harness. The wire harness I got looks to be about 8 inches long with a fuse wired in, a whole mess of electrical tape wrapped around the whole length of the harness, plugs at either end to install it between the switch and the original wire harness, and 2 black plastic tie-wraps to attach the whole mess to somewhere so it doesn't bounce around. To think that it took months and months and months to slap together a few components like this and make it look pretty shoddy. I know, I know, there were 3.8 million of them that had to be made so it should take some time. I just thought the final outcome wout look a little more professional.
