Check Engine light in Ranger?

I have a 95 4cyl,5spd Ford Ranger with 89k miles and the Check Engine light has come on. The truck runs perfect. What could set off the light? I have a Haynes book, but they make it sound like for a 95 and on, I won't be able to check the codes without a scan tool. In fact I can't even find the little module where you can use a jump wire and turn the key on and watch the blinks. The Haynes book says on the 93-94 models it's located on the inside passenger side fender well, but no mention where it might be for a 95.

Can I check the codes myself without the scan tool? What might set off the Check Engine light on a 95 Ranger that runs great? I can't seem to find any vacuum leaks.

Thanks in advance

Any guess as to what set the code would just be a wild ass guess and nothing more. Take it to a parts store such as Autozone, Kragens, etc and have the idiot employees scan it for free. They won't have a clue in the world what the codes mean, but you can post the results here and we will tell you. Now if you need a fart can muffler or a neon license plate frame they will be all over it....

Do not ignore the light. Get it looked at. I had the same light come on and when I got it fixed, my mileage improved a lot.

Wish we had those out here in Hawaii, but it's only Napa, Carquest and Checker out here -all pretty useless...........

I hate to take it to the stealer................

I have a 99 Ranger V6 Flex fuel Bought it last year used.. After a week, check engine comes on ,I take it to the dealer and they said they'll scan for $35 dollars!!. I told them to F themselves. went to pepboys dropped $160 on a scanner (works on all new cars foriegn and domestic) turned out to be a O2 sensor . I just reset the code and still runs great.. ...Year later check engine comes on, truck runs rough .. so i scan...("mis fire cyl #6) was a short in wire another easy fix.. I will very soon recoup the price of the scanner in savings.. and i can scan all the codes for my family and friends. Results given in words not numbers or blinks . I know this helps you not but its certainly a related story.

Any garage should have a scanner (if they don't you sure as hell want to avoid using them) so you don't have to hit the Stealership for this. You might want to consider buying a scanner then you would have it the next time the light illuminates.

How good a scanner do I need? Checker Auto parts sells a UBD I /UBD II combo for about $200. They sell a UBD I for $100, but it says it's for 96 and on vehicles, mine is a 95, but UBD II according to the Haynes book.

There were transitional years for OBD I and OBD II that overlapped. I believe applications were engine specific so you need to know what engine. Do you have the 16 pin plug under the dash on the drivers side? There is supposed to be a sticker under the hood that says OBDII Compliant if it is. Check out this site:

Ooops. Guess I was not fully awake yet. I reread the post 4 or 5 times before replying. Thanks to you and another coffee, I see the punctuation in the first line screwed me up in "I have a 95 4cyl,5spd". Not sure if it was the lack of comma after "95"or the lack of space before the "5spd". Could sworn it read 94 five speed. Thanks for pointing out my confusion.

If it was the 94, I've got the service manual. Sorry, I goofed.
