Delaminating Windshield

The windshield on my 1994 F150 is delaminating just like the frist safety glass windshields of old? I first noticed years ago as a trace of fogging around the black border. Now the air paths are visible, large paths that look like a river delta. I have complained to Ford over the years with absolutely no response. I entered complaint with NTSA for what that was worth. Has anybody else had such a problem with their windshield?

I'm surprised it hasn't broken yet. Everyone I know with a Ford pickup of around that vintage is on at least their third or fourth windshield.

The truck is 13 years old. Have you considered getting a new windshield?

Yep Most replacement windshields will do this as well. The edge of the glass is sealed on a good replacement glass.

Windshields are not supposed to fail in this way; this is not 1955. I have wondered why people are so ready to accept shoddy products and shoddy workmanship in these days and times.

My 1992 F150 had the original windshield when I sold it last year.

Do you have glass coverage thru your insurance? If it was my windshield, I'd be calling my agent and telling him about it. I have zero deductible on glass replacement. Interestingly, the coverage no only covers the windshield, side windows, and rear windows, it also covers mirrors. I had one complete outside electric mirror replaced for free using this coverage.

Weird. I have a friend with a '94 and it is on its third windshield, and it's destroyed (I'm surprised he hasn't been pulled over yet.) Have another friend with a same body style crew cab dually that he drives all over the place and I think he gets a new windshield every

2-3 years. My '93 came with MANY receipts included with the paperwork for either windshield repair or replacement, and it only has 130Kish miles.

How many were replaced because they delaminated and how many were replaced because of rock hits? My 1992 was mostly used as a farm truck in a rural area with very few dump trucks dropping rocks on the road. When I sold the truck the windshield was definitely scratched up (lots of twinkles in some lighting conditions) but it was not delaminated. Over the years I have had many windshields replace because of rock strikes, but never one that delaminated - although I do have a 35 year old Dodge dump truck that could use a new one. I am just scared to have it replaced because the cab is about rotted out around the windshield.

Mostly cracks and chips. Either the aerodynamics of the truck throw more debris than usual directly into the windshield, or they're just made from shitty weak glass. I was just surprised to hear of a Ford pickup windshield that had lasted more than a couple years without impact damage.

I *have* had to replace a couple windows in my '55 Stude due to delamination, but I don't think it's fair to whine about that, especially since the vent windows and door windows are safety glass with exposed edges.

I thought it was actually illegal in the US to use laminated glass for side glass.

Why do you think the Ford glass would be especially weak. I have had glass from at least five different manufacturers replaced due to rock strikes (Ford, Mazda, Audi, GM, Datsun). The glass in my 2 year old Nissan is already showing twinkles, but so far nothing big enough to break it has come along, although with the way the local dump truck operators take car of their loads, it is just a matter of time.

I believe that today you are supposed to use laminated glass for the windshield and tempered glass for everything else, but that was not the case in '55. I'm not sure when the switch occurred. Newest car I've had that I'm sure had laminated side glass was a '56; I don't know what my '62 had (never had to replace a window in that, and the side glass was completely surrounded by stainless frames.)

I've been driving in the same area as two of the trucks I've mentioned for years, and while I probably put more miles on my vehicles than any of them the only windshield repair due to an impact that I've had to have done is one small star repaired on an '02 VW. I did have to have the windshield replaced on my company car but I can't attribute that to a rock hit; it spontaneously cracked overnight while parked on the street, with the crack starting off the edge of the windshield. Maybe a thermally induced crack? I don't know. I also had the windshield replaced on my '89 GTI because the inspector said it was "too sandblasted" but it was not cracked or chipped at all. the only reason I didn't fight him was because it was leaking anyway so I just knocked it out myself, cleaned and painted the lip, and then had the glass guy bring me a new windshield.
