E250 UPGRADES LIGHTS

Nov 22, 2015 10 Replies

Mounted Hella Optilux fogs on the bumper wired with relays powering from ba ttery thru 10Ga wire. A small control panel with aux lights switch's bolts on the computer platform atop the doghouse. Photo later.

With Hella conversion units replacing stock headlamps, Optilux fog cornerin g lights improve might driving beyond expectation moving the van into a nig ht capable road going system. I am blind no longer. Light units mounted on angles when stock mounts were left in Florida. The angles may give more dow nward tilt.

The headlamp units are also tilted downward appearing bright but not partic ularly 'blinding' or 'offensive'

Light units are removable, stored during day or when unnecessary in the are as mentioned. Extra bolts are in the doghouse cup holders, wrench under sea t.

Never stop and get out with a flashlight to find the turn or wonderwhat aby ss lies beyond the incline to the raised roadway traffic light.

Ahhhh....no s*it Dude ! Whatta relief !

The Hi beam situation is null n void. Grille recessed light units split the Hella units light into 3 parts: light dark light . More 10ga power to Hi elements isnot gonna cure that. But the low beam driving light efficiency at hi beam adjustment height levels does not show the light dark light problem down the road abt 400 yards.

above the license plate as a 3rd Hi beam may fill the blind spot.

A Hella 550 mounted center in the E250's bumper behind the front bumper air intake lights the darkened area with the exact light beam: perfect !

Need a right angle drill adapter, jobber's bits (McMasterCarr) including on e for the 550 shaft and the adapter chuck diameter, a carbide grinder bit.

On the 2008, the hole is .3" to your left on dead center and set back 9/16t h's from the 550's main rear body when front is held flush or further shimm ed with a poly jug piece. Hold a felt marker down on rear body, slide 550 r

-l, measure rearward. Drill pilot.

There's a support bracket on the inside bumper surface near dead center.

Used rod with jamb nut at 550, 2 lockouts below 550 bracket all red locktit e n cured.

Used a Bosch relay with 10ga power n ground to batt.

The 2008's knee area cushion cover front of the computer connector is held by 2 brackets. Removing the cover. Screwing on 2 wood strips adds switch mo unting areas for one hand swiping.

When drilling, we herd advice coming from the baboons parked at the RV slum across the street whining abt OptiLux not doing the job.

Hella's arrive with 55 watts. Order a higher Hella bulb wattage in blue/whi te from the supplier. Use 10ga power/grnd wire with 10ga fuse.

A site named POWERSTREAM (inverters...) has a line voltage drop/gauge/wire length calculator consulted before using 18ga wire.

After lighting the darkened center road area with one 550, idea surfaces th at many 2008 or ? drivers may be unaware of the dark channel having adjuste d to not seeing it. Once lit you'll see it.

Damn pothole !

A 550 attack angle adjusts for load/gas weight with the built in friction mount design on the mounting clamp.

Adjusts for load height and traffic conditions. Use able light remains pointing the beam down onto the road abt 100' ahead.

Before we go, our E250 sports a 200amp alternator from Summit.

The first leg ON 40 named THE BEAR HIGHWAY. The route crosses the St Johns River floodplain with deer bear and more bear.

I leave Pittman/Lake Dorr before dawn then back on Thursday n Friday night, Sunday afternoon.

First trip in deer ran across between oncoming car at 200' without the 550 of course. A volunteer ?

We saw 3 deer and 2 bears.

Easy cruising compared to the lightless white knuckle drive.

The 550 switch on the verneer panel is an easy reach.

locals were enthusiastic abt the cornering lights for deer spotting.
