E4OD Low/Rev Failures

Sorry for the re-post. I am new here and forgot to get E4OD in the subject



I work for a rebuilder. Lately we have seen a lot of failed Low/Rev clutches,



burned and slipping. A number of teardowns indicates it is not due to bad or wrong parts, or builder error. I have not found cut seals or other obvious causes. Any ideas? Overheat program mode? High torque from engine braking coupled with low line pressure? Electronic problem?



What the heck is a *L/R clutch* ? anyway??

And, what;'s your best guess?

If you'd stop just long enough to read the subject line, you'd see that l/r is short hand for Low/Rev (or reverse)...

Sorry......I just feel like a long held lover cheated on me, you know? What is it with the Ford guys at the factory? I do love the Fords.............but enough is enough

L/R clutch is the rearmost clutch and it is applied in low and reverse. It sees the highest torque of all the clutches, being applied in the lower ranges. My best guess is that something is causing the line pressure to be low when the torque is high. Maybe closed throttle signal during full throttle operation? Maybe due to worn valves or bores? So far I have ruled out wrong or damaged parts and mis-assembly. But I am baffled as to the root cause.

I think this one is pretty simple. Sound like it is being "stalled to long in first gear on reverse with overall gear ratio being to higher for the load and engine makes torwue to move it which causes converter to heat up a lot and than clutches to fail die to high low speed torque loads when on the converter stall. A fix would be to at the very least boost line pressure for the clutch in question or increase the density of the clutch pack (more clutch plates and friction discs) so that there is more holding power at same line pressure. A look at overall effective gear ratio and (tire size and axle ratio) and load/usage will provide some insight too.

I was going to mention also that perhaps the clutch isn't fully disengaging on upshift, but if youv'e gone through the valve body and nothing's sticking, and all the drain holes in the clutch drum drain ok... well....

sorry for my bad englisch but i have some experiance with other kind of ars and there we had also some problems with two cluches and didn't understand after some reading wee found out that the reverse used two clutches to reverse the the shift to reverse some cars did get a bigger oilpump and others got more plates diferent ways to ingrease the grip an other problem was the temp sensor of the engine the transmision ?kepth? shifting soft for comfort perhaps you have somthing on this....sorry for the bad tranlation "phaeton" schreef in bericht news: snipped-for-privacy@k70g2000cwa.googlegroups.com...
