You have a leak. Your compressor is not destroyed. Check all your fittings with soapy water while the system is pressurized and correct the leak. If you are REALLY that concerned with loose "garbage" in your system, then I suggest using A/C flush on the evaporator and condensor and flush the lines. Remove and check the orifice tube for junk also. You don't need filters as your dryer will catch the junk. A compressor can be picked up at a local junkyard for under $75 usually. Just make sure to change the oil if you are converting to 134a.
