There is a fuse-link between the Battery side of the starter relay and the Alternator. Use a voltmeter or 12v test light and look for 12v at the BAT terminal of the alternator. No voltage indicates that the alternator fuse link is probably burned out. (A continuity test will tell if the link is open/closed) This same link also connects the A terminal of the regulator with the Battery side of the starter-relay(yellow w/white dot wire)

On the 86 model look at the plug in connection at the altenator. I found that corrsion builds up and a bad connecton occurs and the alt will not charge. Hook a volt meter up to the bat and your should see

13 or 14 volts if it is 11 or less it is not charging, wiggle or remove and reinstall the connector at the alt and see if the voltage goes up to 13 or more. good luck dave B.
