Tranny oil temp gauge - where to install?

Question

I just checked out the Tekonsha tranny temp gauge installation instructions.

They show that it should be installed downstream of the cooler, in other word on the return line where the cooled fluid is going back to the transmission.

I've always been of the opinion that gauges should be installed as close as practical to the heat source, before any cooling takes place, since that's when your oil will break down.

So, I would install the gauge inline with the hose going from the tranny to the cooler, as close to the tranny as feasible, before any cooling takes place.

Any thoughts on this?

Installed mine in the pan. I had asked transurgeon aboutthe best location and that is what he suggested. has beenworking just fine for me.Tim

I had one in the tranny pan and also added one more oil cooler inline with the one that came with the truck in 1999 5.4 motor . In the winter  time  if you are in Canada  it would  be  a good  idea to put a buy pass valve on the added cooler so the tranny oil will keep warm . I hear the tranny oil temp should be be near160 degs after the motor is at normal temp? My 2002 F250 7.3 has the tranny temp gauge in the dash and the tranny oil runs from the tranny to the cooler with no rad conections at all . But the tranny oil runs into a system that keeps the oil the same temp as the motor coolent . It works great and when the motor is at  a normal temp the tranny and motor temp gauges never move even on large hills pulling a 5th wheel rv. It is a very good system they have in the diesel that Ford use in the trucks . I think the tranny temp sender is in the pan ?   Hope this helps you some, Good luck and  happy camping .The Fox .
