Transmission Fluid Change--00 Olds Intrigue

My 00 olds intrigue 3.5L has 30K miles (or 50Kkilometres) and the GM dealership tech says that it needs a transmission fluid change based on the smell of the oil. I smelled it and the best description of the smell is that of moth balls. Does burnt transmission fluid have a moth ball smell? The colour is red and not brown or black but when wiping the dipstick rod there is some black dirt/grease coming off. My owners manual states that the transmission fluid change should be done at

50K miles. Do you guys change the transmission fluid this early or is he being extra cautious also some places don't change the filter and only change the fluid. Thanks in advance.

There are 2 different answers you'll get to this question. There will be a flood of replies from guys saying you can wait till 50,000 to change the fluid and there will be replies from others saying its okay to change the fluid at 30,000.

The choice is yours, really. If the fluid is still red in color it should still be alright to run it a bit longer.

I change mine around 30,000.

At this mileage, I would suggest you have them drop the pan, install a new filter, and new fluid. A lot depends on what kind of driving you do, lot's of city stop and go driving equals a "severe" maintenance schedule. Let's put it this way...I've never seen mechanical failures that could be attributed to "too much maintenance", but plenty that could be attributed to "not enough maintenance".
