1997 XJ Executive mystery?

I own a 1997 XJ Executive 3.2 with the straight-6 engine, purchased in Italy. However, according to the information in my posession, all 1997 XJ Executive 3.2s should have a V8 instead.

Does anyone have any information pertaining to this model that doesn't seem to exist? Thanks in advance.

Dimitri, I don't know about Italy, but here in the States, the 1997 came with a 6 cylinder -- not a V-8. The V-8 wasn't introduced here until 1998. Look on the badges or the literature. If you are driving an XJ6 than it is a 6 cylinder. If the badging says XJ8 that it is a V-8. The 3.2 liter engine is the British version of the 6 cylinder 4.0 just as the 2.9 was the lesser version of the 3.6 from 1987-1988. The V-8 engine is a 4.0 although this does not mean the European version was not a bit different.

Dimitri, I have a UK Jaguar Xj8 3.2 litre v8 engine. Registered in the UK in 1997 October. Must have been one of the first I guess, but I think the 3.2litre was a european thing as I do not think that It was exported to the US. So I think that the switchover date from v6 to v8 was summer/autumn 1997 Gary

Thanks everyone. I guess it may just be a marketing issue, which differs from country to country. The badge on the back just says "XJ Executive" (no reference to the no. of cylinders) and that is repeated on the registration papers.

But there is no doubt that there is an in-line six under the hood! Anyway here they offered the six in 3.2, 4.0, and supercharged 4.0 form.

Best, Dimitri

Dimitri, I appreciate various models were released in different years country to country...as far as i know the X300 with the newer style fluted bonnet ( hood ) and body shape as used for the XJ8 was released around 95 in the UK with the same straight 6 engine as the XJ40

But with a modified head gasket...so it would indicate to me you have an X300 (same body style XJ8) with an XJ badge. i can't see any one changeing the engine as the management system would be completely different.. regards peter j.

The XJ6 3.2 and 4 litre 6 cylinder cars were discontinued in October

1997. The production of the first XJ8 3.2 and 4 V8 commenced in late October 1997. In Australia the cars come with a Jaguar plate at the front near the radiator top which is a JAguar plate giving chassis and engine and trim codes. The car also comes with a build date plaque and compliance plaque affixed to the floor pan under the battery compartment cover in the boot (Trunk).

The build date plaque is a requirement of the Australian compliance authorities and tells us the monthand day the car rolled off the line as well as which ADR and international design rules the vehicle complies with. Thus I have a car which is a 3.2 XJ6 Sport built in August 1996, complianced in Australia in December 1996 and sold to its fisrt owner on 21 June 1997.

All countries are different but in all cases the 6 Cyl XJ ceased in production in early October 1997.
