XJ6 Starting Problem

Hi.

1992 XJ6, 76K original miles.

This occurs every time I try to start it; the engine will crank for as long as I care and it won't start. But if I let go then immediately try again it starts right up. Never starts on the first try, always on the second.

This happens whether the engine is warm or cold, weather makes no difference.

If I pump the gas while cranking, sometimes it starts on the first try.

Otherwise the engine runs smoothly, no lack of power, no hessitation.

Just that first try at starting always fails.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

John.

Does seem like it could be a fuel pump issue (maybe relay failing or pump losing prime?)... try turning the ignition on for 20 seconds or so before turning it all the way to start position.

The fuel pump did cross my mind. I also think it may be a cloged fuel filter?

I will try what you suggest.

Thanks

FWIW, I had these symptoms with a Mini which had a problem with the sarting solenoid. Something to do with not enough power to the starting solenoid when the starter motor was cranking. There was still enough momentum in the motor to keep it turning when the starting solenoid got all the power as the motor stopped drawing current so it would fire . It was not a problem if the motor fired at first crank. A new solenoid fixed the problem. Someone will tell me I'm totally off the mark. Graham L

Well...

Yesterday all day and this morning I switched the ignition to ON (all lights on the dashboard lit) for about 20 to 30 seconds before firing the starter. I tried this about 10 times whenever I started the car, cold or warm.

This did not make any difference, first time I can crank it forever and will not fire until I let go of the ignition and try again. Starts right away on the second try, always.

I'm inclined to think it might be something in the fuel system because sometimes it will start on the first try if I pump the gas pedal.

Great suggestion, thanks.

Had the car diagnosed by a professional Jaguar shop. The fuel pump needs to be replaced. There is a fuel pressure return component that's part of the pump that's not holding the pressure when the engine is turned off.

This is an in-tank fuel pump and not cheap to replace. If anyone has done this job, I'd like to get some tips; how hard is it, etc.?

Thank you much.

I would try turning the ignition on and waiting 15 secs (to pressurize the system) and then trying to start it. Or, depending on your electrics, putting it into a gear (R) and turning the ignition on and waiting and then giving it a try.
