4.0?!?!

I bought a 2003 TJ a few weeks back -- and have taken it out on the highway a few times.. I have to say the 4.0 has lots of get up and go for city driving -- but on the highway -- what happened?!?! It's great up until 100Kms (65miles) ish but after that it seems to really have problems -- it's a chore to keep it at 120 in 5th gear and come any real hill it's pretty pethetic even gearing down to 4th or even

3rd..

Is it just my jeep or is this a common thing -- does this motor really suck that bad on the highway??

you have to remember how much a Jeep weighs (4000 lbs) and that it is a big box going through the air. tbird

If you have the 3.07 ratio run in 4th and it will be plenty quick.

120 in a ford? I didn't know tow trucks went that fast!

No but the aerodynamics of the Wrangler do. You're essentially pushing a brick through the air and it's not very efficient. Your power is extremely adversely effected the faster you go. This isn't a curvy aerodynamic Corvette, you know...

Even if you had a 914 or 924, you probably could... I had an '89 944 turbo... Topped out at 164... Got a ticket for 154 in a 55 (I was either still winding though the gears or I had slowed for a curve)... Hard to outrun the radio though... $200 + court costs... For some reason, the judge got really pissed when I asked if I could take defensive driving...

Nope 3.73's..

Yep it's a 6.. You can't even get the 4 cylinder in the 2003 model year here unless it's special ordered none of the dealerships carried it...

3.73's with 225/75r15's.. I was planning on a future lift, re-gearing and so forth -- but may be changing those plans real quick if this is how gutless the 4.0/6 is..

I've owned lots of vehicles over the years and man -- this thing doesn't seem much better off then the guttless 2.0/4 I had in an old truck years ago..

As some have said, it's the aero... I have a '98 4.0L, 235/75/R15, 5 speed and run up to the PA mountains every other weekend or so... the trip is through some fairly hilly country, with a couple of good climbs thrown in. The Jeep is much better than my '87 Toyota 4Runner with the 2.4L, 4 banger, but I still have to remind myself that 5th gear is a "cruising" gear, not hill climbing gear. The thing will run 75 (120 or so km) all day on level ground with light winds, but a head wind or a hill will make you work at it some... a steady climb means 4th gear and 60mph (95 km) or so. Nature of the beast. The engine is good and peppy, but the high gears are for mileage not power. And basically, the thing has the drag coefficient of a large brick.

I usually put cruise control on my Sahara @ 80mph on the freeway & have no problems.....

Even the lowly 2.0 914 could easily cruise at 125. As for your ticket, WHERE? In many states going more than 15 or 25 over the limit was usually an instant take in, car and all, with instant cell time for speeds over 100. [except for the two pockets of sanity, Montana and Nevada]. And only a lousy $200?!?! I got nailed for a measly 95 in a 55 in California and it ended up costing about $775. Can I move to where you got this cheap ticket?
