90 Cherokee Oil Leak (I know the common places)

I just bought my cherokee a little over a week ago. Im getting fresh oil looks like above the oil pan its drpping off of the tranny bell housing.


  1. I replaced the oil filter adapter O-rings
  2. I know its not the valve cover gasket i can find fresh oil anywhere

I have oil all over the bottom of my jeep and drips on the exhaust when im parked it will even drip in different places sometimes, also its on the sides of the oil pan and up by the FR wheel and all over the starter.



My oil pressure gauge is at 3 O'Clock I do get a signal from it when i ground the wire but could the leak be from the oil sending unit? oil is everywhere on the passenger side. Also how do i remove the sending unit i dont want to screw somthing up. Any help is appericated. Thanks

Yes, the sending unit can and does leak sometimes.

I always figure a nice mud pit run is in order to find the leak(s). You go have fun at the local mud pit, drive home and the mud will dry all over the engine making the fresh leak 'very' obvious. The mud also helps take off the oil when you hose it down because it absorbs it.

Best guesss: rear of valve cover, very common problem on I6. If the back of the block is wet, that is your problem. Otherwise, could be rear seal.

I just did the valve cover tonight noticed the three bolts that have threads on the top were loose, Im going to drive it tomorrow to see if that was the case, I was almost for certain it was not that but it didnt hurt to try, I did see old on the back of the trasmission probably when i drive it spills out on it.
