91 jeep cherokee info

Hows it going i just bought a 91 cherokee and am having some trouble with the 4 wheel drive. I dont know much about 4 wheel drive in the first place. I would like to know how to shift it in gear and out. What the part time light means. Also the rocker switch for the transmission. I might need to find an owners manual and maybe a service book. Also might be looking for random parts and accesories. Wanna eventually turn into a off road vehicle. Any help by any one will be greatly appreciated. Thanks .

If yours is like my '98, the "Part Time" lamp tells you that you have the "Command-Trac" 4WD Transfer Case. See if there isn't a sticker on the headliner, above the driver's sun visor.

As my decal (and the owner's manual) says, you should only engage the

4WD on slippery, loose road surfaces. You'll tear-up the system if you engage it full-time on dry paved surfaces.

I believe that you should be able to shift in and out of 4WD High "on the fly". For Low Range (are you pulling stumps?), I come to a full stop and shift the transmission to Neutral or Park.

Welcome to life with an XJ.

I live in Canada and treat the 4x4 'part time' shift just like any other. When I see a snowy patch coming, I shift into 4 high and keep on going at the speed for snow driving. When I see clear coming, I shift back to 2 wheel drive. I find left turns at snowy intersections can be easier in 2 wheel drive, then shift to 4 coming out of the turn.

This is for the command trac or part time system. What does your shifter say on it? If 2 Hi, 4 high, N and 4 low, it is the part time one. If not, you can use the full time system anytime.

To shift into or out of 4 low for slow crawling, the best is to be rolling along at 2 mph or so.

The 'part time' part of the 4x4 locks the front and rear driveshafts together and only should be used on dirt or snow.

I have a 91XJ, but my owners manual is not for sale. Try Ebay or maybe, just maybe, the dealer.

The rocker switch puts the transmission into either a "normal" or "Power" mode. In the "power" mode, it stays in the lower gears longer, which would be good for trailer towing, for example. I never use it (leave it in normal..maybe it actually says "economy") except for about once a year to make sure it still works. It does NOT appear to solve the problem of hunting back and forth between lockup vs no lockup and 3rd vs

4th on steep interstate upgrades (I-5 on the Grapevine if I'm pushing it). For those situations, I just put it in "3" until the top of the hill.

Best Regards,

DAve
