Airbag light on solid

I have a 97 Cherokee and recently the air bag light came on and stays on solid. My horn has also stopped working. I don't know if the two things are related because I can't even remember the last time I used the horn. I was going to pop the front cover off the steering wheel and have a look to see if any wires came unplugged but I am a little nervous of the air bag. Is it safe to unplug and plug in the wires in the steering column? Does anyone have any other suggestions or things to try?

Can't see why it would be a problem if you disconnect the battery first, which also happens to be the first line in the procedure from my recollection.

I personally don't know what 'COULD ALLOW INADVERTENT DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIR BAGS' means....

Do you?

Maybe all it takes is a power surge to the computer like can happen when a battery gets disconnected or connected?

If it's that unstable, I would definitely disconnect it ( it cant hurt me if I'm outside), take the thing out, then drive to the dealer and get them to fix it.

To risk getting back to one of the main topics of this newsgroup, which is to bash Chrysler Corporation and successors in business, what the heck were they thinking mounting the air bag control module outside of the passenger compartment where water and/or road salt could get to it?

From what I understand, Air bags are NOT dependant on the battery to deploy, there is a stored charge that has to be discharged in order to work on them. Step one is to disconnect the battery, then step two is to discharge the system. I am taking this from memory from a Saturn manual I had, but I thought it was applied generically across all air bag equipped cars. Tony

would make sense, but isn't mentioned in the manual.

David,

You are a brave man. Every once in a while the air bag light in my 2001 Chevy Silverado stays on, and the temptaion is to bail out of the seat. I couldn't even fathom attempting to take it apart. I agree with Mike. Let someone else deal with this.

HUH, that module was under the drivers seat, they take it out, remove your center console and put a new smaller one under there. I had it done when they were replacing my emergency brake handle and my front rotors, both under recalls. I have a 98XJ
