Buying '94 Cherokee, things to look out for?

My '96 has the 4 litre injected ... as concerns that engine and hard starting ... mine starts on the 2nd r of r,r,r. My subaru starts in anticipation of my turning the key :-) so I initially thought the jeep hard starting for an injected engine. So ... what you describe is not in my opinion typical ... there is something imo that needs attention (e,g, maybe the battery's tired and is not holding the charge it should, ???).

1. So ... which engine do you have?
2. Take it out into the gravel and check out the 4H, 4L ... if the previous owner didn't use them, they may no longer function and some work will be required.
3. My right (left?) front universal was seized ... maybe check out the universals.
4. And there is the proverbial cracked manifold to look into.

Hope the above is of some use ... I myself would not trade my Cherokee for anything :-).

Turn the ignition to ON, then wait about three seconds, then try to start. If it fires up you have a leakdown problem in the fuel system. That could be the pressure regulator, or the check valve in the fuel tank.

Well, maybe the cranking length was a bit exaggerated...but it def'n doesn't start as quickly as I think it should, maybe cranks for 3-4 seconds before starting. My Honda is much the same as your Subaru (another car which I absolutely love...mmmmm 5 spd Outback wagon). All I have to do is think about it and it starts.

Nothin' but 4 litre goodness for me!

The Jeep is coming from western Michigan, so I know the 4wd has gotten a workout during the winter months. The city it's from tends to not plow if it snows after 5 p.m. or on a weekend, so 6" of snow on the roads is not uncommon.

Hadn't heard about this. What things should I look for? Intake or exhaust?

Well since from within the snow /rust belt areas. check out the floor pans ..from the inside..

Exhaust ... maybe do a google search, you'll likely find sites with pics, explanation ... it seems to be a point of failure. Fortunately for me when I bought my Cherokee used, the dealer spotted it and replaced it, no charge to me. Needless to say, I'll buy from them again, and they get my recommendation to anyone I hear that's buying a jeep.
