Cherokee Fixin' - U joints

Vehicle in question is my 89 Cherokee Pioneer 4.0 5spd manual.

While greasing the front u-joint on the front driveshaft, I managed to break the grease nipple out of the joint. It's been this way for about a month. I want to replace the joint. I have heard that I should replace all(3?) the joints on the front driveshaft.

I've never done u-joints before but I'd like to learn. I have a 4" vice and air tools. What steps do I need to take to replace all three joints? (Hoping for a detailed step by step! [Bill!]). Will I need a shop to press parts in and out?

Can I remove the front driveshaft, drive to work w/the front driveshaft disconnected, have the pressing done after work and then re-install? (I'm planning to do this on Sunday, no one is open on Sunday with a press that I know of).

Does it matter which brand of joint I buy?

Anything else I should be doing while I've got the driveshaft off?

Any other tips?

Thanks,

Carl

Bill- Thanks for the links. I'm not sure I understand what zerk to remove, and what "cups" you mean, or the centering bearing thing. Can you be more elaborate for a first-timer?

Thanks,

Carl

Take a look at the link from Bill. The complete U-joint has an 'X' in the center with 4 bearing assemblies on the ends. #4 shows the old 'U' joint with the cup on (left side), #5 with it off. Complete new assembly is on the right. The 4 bearing assemblies are usually referred to as 'Cups", the 'X' piece as the 'cross'. Picture #5 clearly shows the zerk fitting screwed into the cross piece on both old and new.

OOO! Got it! The Zerk is what I referred to as the "Grease nipple".

Thanks Roy and Bill!
