CJ-5 manual to automatic transmission questions.

I was in a bad accident my left hand doesn't work like it used to.Driveing a standard transmission vehicle is fun but not safe for me or anyone else on the road.

I need to swap the standard transmission out of my 1983 CJ-5 for a automatic. I'd like to do it myself, I'm pretty mechanically inclined. I've just never done that before. Where do I start?

Best way to do this (and easiest) is to find a simular model with a automatic in a bone yard. Splines will likely be different on Tcase with automatic so if you be easest if you got a automatic and a tcase. As far as trannies, you want a THM 400 that was used until 79 in Jeeps or Trouqe Flite from 1980 one for a Jeep. AMC standardized bolt pattern in id 70's so any tranny from a 6 or V8 will bolt up to engine. THM 400's were ouly used with Qtrac Jeeps so if you use a THM400 for this, you will need to change the output shaft on it as it is too long and no adaptor is going to fix that. If you want to avoid shaft swap , use a 80 or later Torque Flite.

Maybe I am wrong but I think there were no automatic CJ5s ever built.

Another thought, I just can't see how your hand is not good enough for driving, but you can tackle a transmission swap. I really hope that you have a lot of help for your project.
