code 740 on 97 ZJ 5.2

Dec 26, 2005 2 Replies

I have a code 740 on my 97 Grand Cherokee with the 5.2. My reader says it is a torque converter wire problem. I have noticed that it no longer locks the converter at or about 45mph.

any ideas about this?

thanks

740? That doesn't make sense, I think it should be a two-digit code on that year Jeep.

According to my research code 740 means the engine thinks it is running too fast for the speed. will it hurt the vehicle to leave a 740 code alone until the transmission get worse. my milage has not changed (still 17 to 18 mpg). acceleration appears upaffected. in other words the vehicle seems to run the same except for the check engine light. by the way the vehicle has about 160,000 miles on it.
