Diagnostic codes?

My father's 1992 Ford Ranger has its Check Engine Light on. I know about all the Jeep tricks etc, but does anyone know how to pull the codes on a Ranger? Also, don't some shops pull the codes for free? Coulda swore a couple chains did, but I can't remember names. Thanks in advance!

Thanks Billy.... I gave them a call, and apparently they can't do a '92. Something about the type of computer or something. I'll try a couple more further away from my parents' house... they do live a bit in the boonies hehehehe.

That truck uses ODB I, and AutoZone will not be able to pull codes from it.

There is rumored to be a control module under the passenger seat that has an LED on it. This LED should flash similar to how the Jeep's check light flashes.

There is another post with better info that this. The Exploror uses EEC which is not a OBD standard. You need a different scanning tool for this proprietary diag. Autozone can pull codes from OBD-I vehicles with no problems.

Thanks again Jeff, Carlo, Peter. The OBD issue is why they said they couldn't pull the codes on my father's Ranger. However the info was relayed to me over the phone, so I didn't hear exactly what was said regarding OBD I vs. OBD II. I'll take a closer look at his truck next time I'm there, and do a little more research. Maybe visit my local Autozone here as well.

I received my Jeep service manual today it is also OBD-I just like my VW. My VW had the OBD-II connector and it works fine with my OBD-II scanner. The Jeep will also work except I it has the old style OBD-I connector with basically needs the OBD-II to OBD-I patch cable and then it should work. About AZ, well, I never went there to get my codes. OBD-I is basically the same comm protocol as OBD-II but has a lot fewer codes to deal with. Both my YJ and VW are 1994 models.

I went to an Autozone once with a code 51 on my 94YJ. I knew it was a bad O2 sensor. Jerkoff behind the counter read from his little workstation "HO2S"(Heated O2 Sensor) and told me it was a water sensor that was bad. I limped home on a bad sensor. That is and was the last time I ever go to Autozone for anything.
