Flakey speedometer

Feb 12, 2005 2 Replies

Is it safe to think that if my speedometer is accurate at 60mph (60 seconds between mile markers) that it is accurate at other speeds as well? At lower speeds it doesn't feel correct. And intermittently when starting from cold it stays at the 5mph peg for three to five minutes before registering a speed at all. I assume this is an electronically controlled speedo. Is that correct? 92 Cherokee Laredo, Auto,

Stephen,

Get a friend with a GPS unit and take a ride where you can check several speeds. In Madison, WI, I would be happy to help.

In theory, if it is accurate at 60, it's accurate across the full operating range.

Mine ('81 CJ5) is driven by a spinning cable. The speedo head can become dirty inside, and then it can stick when cold and take a long time to pull off of zero. It is sounding like you need to give it a service call.
