fowl oil oder from jeep

After taking a short drive in our 94 wrangler it will always emit a fowl oil oder. I have changed the trans pan seal ,which was leaking and the filter . I thought that would correct the problem and it did for awhile . Its driving my wife crazy because when we park it in the garage ,it stinks up the whole house. I've looked underneath ,but can find no leaking. Can anyone help please!

Oil from the previous leak may still be dripping on the exhaust system.

Have you considered your local coin car wash to clean the undercarriage?

What kind of odor? Rotten eggs is the sign of a cat going bad. Sweet is antifreeze. Burning oil smells just like..er.. burned oil.

Did you run over something like a skunk?

In the past, on my '89 YJ, a leaky rear pinion seal would cause a smell. Check the muffler and tail pipes for residue.

Stick or automatic? Motor oil smells, but gear lube can unclog your sinuses.

not just the exhaust manifold, a bad valve cover gasket will get you oil running down the back of the engine and onto the exhaust pipe below. I had to steam clean my engine compartment and undercarriage after my rear main seal went bad.

Could be some drizzled down the side of the block last time it was filled with oil and is burning off.

I second the suggestion of taking it to the car wash and giving it an all over scrubbing, under the hood and the under belly.

Well motor oil is some pretty mild smelling stuff unless it's burning, Gear oil, now their's something that could be described as foul. But you have an Auto so the only place that could be coming from is your axles...

I used to have a car with a sick automatic, and every once in a while it would buck on takeoff. Whenever it did that it would belch transmission fluid out of the filler right onto the hot exhaust pipe on the right side of the engine.

What made it even better is the heater was in the floor on the passenger side and fed air by some big (leaky) air hoses that went through the engine compartment.

As a result every time the transmission puked a big cloud of really nasty smelling smoke would pour out from under the passenger seat.

The don't make them like that anymore .

My TJ always stinks after a grease job. The rear driveshaft U-Joints throw grease onto the muffler and it takes a few days to burn off enough that it doesn't stink anymore.

Good point. Look for a carmel color on the muffler that will be toasted grease. The bright side is that it's natural rust preventative.

have the axle lube changed. there was a bad batch of gear oil put out that would do exactly that.
