Your "friend" was smart enough to get rid of a 6 year old Jeep before he had to spend money to keep it going. All he needed was a moron to sell it to. Then along comes "lemonowner". LOL

1) AC. the accumulator doesn't just blow, Mechanical failure is always a possibility but those are high pressure vessels. They can be overfilled and the sensor switch can leak. Some had a recall for failure but not your model year.

AC is suffering badly. I'm wondering if it was severely overchargedor someone put too much oil in the system. The evaporator coil (inside coil)is difficult to service. I'm leaning toward a severe over-pressure caused bytoo much oil or refrigerant in the system.
2) Exhaust header. Oh yes... miserable piece of "crapsmanship" if ever there was one. The all break. Replaced mine with a Banks header.

3) Nylock nuts.. on an exhaust header! Now that is just incompetence in action. Stainless steel with antiseize is the way to go.
4) Pads and calipers.... Pads and rotor I would believe, but not the caliper unless the pad ripped out and the piston got eaten. But even then the piston can be replaced, all depends on the amount of damage done. I went with Stillen rotors and Performance Friction pads. Replacing only the pads and rotor takes all of an hour and can be done with minimal tools.
5) Battery... sometimes they do that. You need to make sure all the connections are clean and free of corrosion. Also make sure the battery is properly filled and the electrolyte is at the proper strength. Have someone check the charging system unless you can do it yourself.Wahhhh. I own 4 XJs, 1 CJ and 1YJ
1990 Renix (now that really sux!) Fixed it up, cut and welded, 32" tires, goes where I want it. Bought USED! 1994 YJ 4.0 - Fender cut, welded front and rear, 2.5" lift. No problems. Bought it used with 84,000 miles on it. Bought USED, no problems other than routine maintenace. 1983 CJ8 - 198,000 miles, needs engine rebuilt. Not too bad for a USED Jeep. 1986 XJ - Had to replace the engine at 200,000. GM 2.8, still not too bad for USED. 1992 XJ - 185,000 miles. Replaced the engine, just wanted more power. Put in a slight modified 1997 4.0 HO engine (both were bought USED) Daily driver and weekend warrior. Still going strong. 1986 XJ - Another 2.8 (glutton for punishment) Bought used and abused. Previous owner counldn't get it running. He hated the Jeep. Got it home, tune up, carb cleaned, runs good now!All I own now are Jeeps. Everything was bought used (and sometimes abused). Before I bought any of them, I carefully checked them out (engine, tranny, suspension, etc). I maintain all my vehicles like any auto should be. Sounds like the previous owner(s) may not have done anything. Of course, the BUYER should check or have the vehicle checked out throughly before laying down the cash.
My shop does pre-purchase inspections. We check everything we can think of and whatever the customer want us to check. Maybe you should have taken it to a trusted auto technician before you bought it. Of course, somethings just plain wear out and can't be caught, but that goes with owning any vehicle.
Sorry you got a lemon, but that is the way things go sometimes!!

Being a Brit, you would know the following facts.. that Jaguar gearboxes used to break just for fun.. that Rover exhaust systems would need replacing at six monthly intervals.. that MG Maestros spent more time being fixed than they were on the road.. that general advice given to owners of any BL product was to buy a house next door to a dealer so that it wouldn't have to be pushed so far.. quit blasting Jeeps.. they are no worse than many others..
You might also want to try another place to get it fixed too.. your current repairer(s) seem to have little idea of what they are doing..

Folks.. I think this person has little if no knowledge of autos and has been royally screwed by mechanics and rightfully put off by DC's normal fuckups and piss poor quality control. But is hardly a troll.

Sorry guys, you are boring me now. My work is done here. I have achieved what I set out to. I look forward to many years of happy motoring with BMW and many years telling people of my experience with Jeep, DC and some of the imbeciles I met along the way. By the time you read this I will have unsubscribed so you won't even have the satisfaction of me seeing your replies...cherio ;-)))

Oh BTW, BMW and MB are the biggest lemon returned vehicles on the market. If you don't have the cash for repairs on a Jeep, you will soon find out how expensive a BMW will be.

Not unlike the kind words he received when first posting to this group? Check the thread and you will see very few if any responses that are helpful. This isn't alt.flame, and I'm fairly sure the word recreation and Jeep are part of this groups name.
When is the last time you saw a troll go to the trouble this guy did to present his case? ... you nailed it, he just doesn't know Jeeps, bought with higher expectations and is overall dissatisfied. I wouldn't recommend any Jeep to someone that wasn't prepared to spend money on repairs... that's what Honda's and Toyota's are for. The nice thing about Jeeps is that the repairs are fairly predictable and usually cheap (but lots of them). Let's tip a mug to "lemonowner" and wish him all the best with his X5.
