jeep cherokee pioneer?

i know it's a stupid question, but i wasn't alive when my cherokee was made. what was special about the "pioneer" submodel of cherokee? just what advantages did it have over a base cherokee? was it an off-road version? if someone knows i would appreciate it! thanks!

Pioneer is a trim/equipment package. The packages from least to most expensive were: base, sport, pioneer, laredo, and limited. The specifics of each package varied depending on the year model.

Joe, 90XJ Laredo

The Pioneer package had some fake crome and up graded seats.

Lets see after driving my 1987 Cherokee (probably a Base Model) 4 cylinder and then buying my 88 XJ.

My 1988 Cherokee Pioneer differences were: Chrome bumpers Full Carpeting Intermittent Wipers Headlight Delay

Not sure if the above were options or standard equipment. I think the below was optional

I don't recall a difference in the seats between the two. (Limited should come with leather seats) Selectrac (the 87 XJ had Command Track) A/C

4 doors rear window defrost (87 XJ no defrost) am fm cassette tilt steering wheel (IIRC no tilt 87 XJ) 4.0 engine

My 88 pioneer came with: dual Power six way cloth seats cool olympic ring symbol sticker thing. (the 88 olympics I guess) colored fenders chrome bumpers privacy glass power door locks/windows selec trac with full time 4wd. auto tranny with power/comfort switch cruise fog lights wiper delay rear wiper roof rack rear cargo sliders/tie downs.

5 spoke alum wheels tow package 3.55 gears hitch, etc hd cooling (lol that crappy old system) full instrument cluster and after all that it came with a 13.5 Gallon gas tank. What a joke.

Not bad for 1988. It is retired now and only gets to go to the dirt and rocks. No more grocery getting.

WHEW You had a lot of options ordered on your Pioneer.

I have an 88' Pioneer w/165k on it. I can answer questions or look things up for you. Did I mention it is for sale? Yes, $600 and you can take it off my hands. Located in Philly suburbs email me for deatils snipped-for-privacy@hotmail.com

Thanks for the picture. It appears to be a Limited model (or Country) that somebody changed the graphics on. I'm not sure where the lower body cladding has gone, but maybe they weren't on export models.

ir's a nice Jeep anyway.
