jeeping in the clouds

i took the rubicon into what i consider high altitude (10,979 feet) today and was really pleased with its performance all the way around (handling, pulling grades, etc.). i know there are higher places, but after spending over 30 years at 85 feet elevation this was a pretty big deal to me. see

Sounds like fun. Maybe I'll pass you on the road. I need to head down to Durango sometime this week or next.

I NEED to do some camping......

Glad you're enjoying life at high altitude nate, now you'll probably spend all your free time elk hunting and fishing, instead of surfing. If you ever get down into CO you'll have to look me up. Seems like newer vehicles do fine up here even when coming from sea-level. I remember vacationing out here from WI as a kid, and my parents wagoneer, and dodge diplomat always had vapor locking problems when we got up high.

Have a great time. I'm jealous. I went for a drive in the mountains this weekend and did some hiking but haven't gone camping yet. And my next few weekends are already full. It's dry out there, watch out for fires, passed a 3,000 acre fire this weekend while on my drive! I'll actually be up in Steamboat Springs sunday.

Look up Earl while you're in Silverton.... see if he's still kicking.

You won't find me in the bars because the Lord Krishna frowns on those who alter their minds and pollute their bodies with poison. I don't want to live the next life as a parasitic worm or a Californian, so I live purely in this one. Om shanti shanti shanti. You would have better luck simply looking me up in the phone book, but if you must go into those dens of iniquity...

It is colder than last year, and they has been some rain, but not much. In town we got a frost last week and the porch thermometer reads forty or less every morning. I'll bet it's colder in the high country. It is not as dusty as last year, and there may not be fire restrictions, but it sure can get windy in the afternoon. My preference for camping up here is September or early October after the flatlanders start going home. The weather is usually clearer and more dependable then too. Right now I am spending most of my time on home improvement and EMS. Hard Rock 100 (100 mile cross country run that starts and ends in Silverton) starts Friday. Now those guys are crazier than the folks in this newsgroup!

Just trying to help the local economy. :) Actually, I'll be with my 10 yr. old daughter, so that kind of activity won't really present itself, twas more of a joke. Though, here in Texas, the only worms associated with alcohol come in bottles of mezcal.

Thanks for the weather report, though I think I'll leave my running shoes at home, as I can barely walk up there. Glad to hear it's not as dusty...I can handle the chill. Thanks for taking time out to respond! If you see a black and red Rubi, come say "HI".

Hi Nathan, Aren't the Absaroka's (sp?) fantastic??!! Bear Tooth Pass is one of my favorite (no

4x4 required) spots on earth. Looking at your pictures sure brought back some great memories for me. I spent a summer working at Wapiti, which is between the east gate of Yellowstone and Cody, WY. One of the trips I took while I was there was up and over the pass and on to Billings on one long weekend. Take the trip, give yourselves lots of time. Spend some time in Red Lodge, its a neat town. If you have not already, take the drive up the gravel road that is across the valley from the switch backs up the pass. Its a whole new view. =) You are so lucky to be living there!!!!

"we reached a height of almost 11,000 feet (gps said 10,979) and the jeep ran as strong as it did at 3200 feet."

Sure - you installed a supercharger on your Rubi?

Other than that typo, great pics. I want to go to that area.

absolutely amazing!

its right up the road from me, and i plan on making that trip as often as possible. it was interesting to see more snow on the ground there in july than we ever got in 30+ years in north carolina. some 15-20 miles down the road it was 80 degrees.

believe me, i remind myself of that every single day. :-)

not a typo. the jeep performed with absolutely no noticeable loss of power at nearly 11,000 feet.

I'll have to pop out a big map this weekend and see if I can remember some of the other really neat spots we went to while I was out there. All of it was highway or gravel, since I only had a 2wd pickup at the time.

I remember the guys (and gals) at the station all being amazed that I not only knew what was wrong when my truck quit on me, but how to fix it. I didnt have the heart to tell them how simple it was. we knew the fuel pump was going out but figured to see how long it would last. When it finally died a few weeks after I got there I just ran into Cody and got a new one and put it in, no big deal - it was a mechanical one. heehee...

One thing you really should take the time to do at some point is to go up to Glacier National Park. Anytime of year that you can. The first time I was ever there, I hit Camroon Lake in Waterton (the Canadian 1/2 of the park) 3 days after the ice broke - INCREDIBLE!!!! The place is fantastic. I've been up there a couple of times since, and I still want to go back. I have always wanted to start driving up the Rockies, down around Colorado or points south, and just go north....until I run out of mountians! =)
