Moab 2004

Hey newsgroup, you're all invited to check out our latest Jeeping Adventure: Jerry & Tim do Moab 2004!

My buddy Tim and I are lucky to live within a few hours of Moab. Having worked & lived back East for 15 years, I know what it's like wishing you could hit these trails. If you've never been, QUIT YOUR JOB AND GET OUT THERE!!!

FYI, my rig is the dark green '94 YJ with the Avalanche rocker guards, my buddy from Denver, Tim, has the clean-as-a-whistle metallic blue '93 YJ.

My '94 has 35" BFG Muds on 10" Eagle 589s, Dynatrac D44 w/ARB front, Dynatrac D60 w/Detroit rear, Atlas II and a Rubicon 4.5" Extreme Duty SUA suspension, with M.O.R.E. 1" body lift, and their extended shock mounts. The shocks are Doetsch 8000's. Durango Bumpers, a Warn XD9000i winch and a host of other stuff I've paid for and now forgotten is on there! (FWIW, the big Warn TJ flares were reinstalled right before Moab in a momentary loss of good sense, the little stock TJ flares have been put back on....I'm feeling much better now.)

Tim's got 35" BFG ATs on Eagle 8" rims. He's still running stock axles, but with a Superior "Super 35" axle & Detroit kit in the rear, also with a Rubicon 4.5" suspension, Performance Accessories 1" body lift and Rancho

9000's. (Tim gets the award for cleanest Jeep at Moab.)

Here's the link, hope you enjoy watching as much as we did running the trails!

Yep, it's a very a very common conversion on rock rigs. You may also have noticed the shot of the superb red YJ that we included with a custom 4 link & coilover conversion.

I did notice that, yes. Looked quite special.

Bill cannot comment, due to suffering an aneurysm caused by the extreme shock of such a heresy.

They look great Jerry. I even recognized a few rigs. I'm hopefully taking Thursday off to go run Cliffhanger with a bunch of Jeepster owners. If I can get out of a few work commitments.

I'm going with a group in 3 weekends; we plan to do cliffhanger. How bad is that supposedly "bad" step on the shelf road? (Reading about the trail in a book.) Is it as pucker-inducing as the book implies, or is the author overexaggerating again? The pic does look pretty crazy, and near the ledge ;-)

We're also doing Moab Rim during the trip; any thoughts/opinions on that trail?

Thanks, Bob

If you are refferring to Chas Wheeler's Moab Trails book, it's not quite as bad as he describes it. I tried to convey the relationship between the obstacle and the cliff edge in the photos. The obstacle is about 4 ft. high, but is not off camber towards the edge, so if you managed to roll, it's highly unlikely you'd go off the edge.

That being said, it's a major ledge that requires good spotting. I would not do it alone, in fact like most Moab trails, it's not adviseable to be out there on your own.

I don't have any experience with Moab Rim. (MAybe next year.) The Red Rock 4 Wheelers rate it 4+. They're always consistent in their ratings.

No help here. This was to be my first time on Cliffhanger and it looks like my plans for thursday are falling through. Probably gonna head out Saturday and run Poison Spider and a few easier trails with those guys. Darn work always getting in the way of my fun.

Thanks. All I used was a little Nikon 5400 digital, with a Nikon accessory polarizer. Tim used a smaller Olympus digital, not sure what the model is.

I've switched completely to digital over the last two years. I used the little 5400 so I wouldn't have to wrestle my D1x while trying to drive. I could keep it in a littl bag right behind the console and could grab it quickly, shoot & stuff it back in the bag. The files were 1mb JPEGS, didn't need much tweaking but when necessary I processed them in Photoshop. I think the Moab Action Shots files are scans from Fuji Velvia, not sure, but they were done on film.

I thought the pictures were digital.. I've got one and love it the pictures are consistently clear - how many Megapixils were you taking the picts at? I see it is capable of 5 mgpx... I can't remember the best size for posting on the web - scanning I know its at 200 - I'm asking questions because I'm planning on updating my digital cam... thanks for the info ~D

The Nikon 5400 is 5 megapixels. I shot the files as 1 meg JPEGS, posted on that website are about 90-100kb. Tim's were a lot smaller, maybe 250kb best.
