'94 YJ Speed Sensor

I called my dealer today, and found that the '94 YJ does not have a speedo cable. It has a speed sensor, which he says might be the reason the speedometer reads erratically, bounces around, and sometimes does not read at all.

Anybody ever replace the speed sensor on a '94YJ? Any hints or ideas as to where it is and if it is easy or hard to replace?

If the sensor was bad, it would normally not work period. Most electronics up and quit, they don't give fits first.

You are now describing a dirty connection on the plug for the speed sensor. A contact cleaner spray does wonders for these computer signal plugs and sockets. WD40 will work for this but a real contact cleaner is better. I also use dielectric grease on the rubber skirt seal the plugs have to help keep them clean.

I don't know for sure, but I think I remember someone saying it was down on the side of the t-case.

I had a bad VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) on my 91 YJ and my speedometer still worked fine. For me, when I would push in the clutch when coming to a stop, the engine rpm's would drop way down to where the engine would almost die and sometimes the vehicle would shudder and then usually the rpm's would go back to normal just before it died. It is located on the tcase, I belive it was where the speedo cable plugs in.

The speed sensor plugs mechanically into the transfer case near the output shaft. It has an electrical connector that plugs into the nearby wire loom.

Your speedo is more likely filled with dirt and grime and is sticking, or the ground to the dashboard electronics is intermittant.

Actually, your YJ does have a speedo cable. Probably dirty or rusty inside and needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Before you do anything, check the length of the cable for any breaks in the casing. Not long ago mine broke loose from its underbody clips and melted on the exhaust, causing erratic needle movement on the dial. I simply cleaned the wound, taped it up, and re-clipped it to the underbody. Works fine now.

That brings up another issue. The mount for the speed sensor is an eccentric, the gear isn't mounted to a pin in the center, the pin is off center to accomodate different gear sizes. If somebody pulled the sensor out at some point, and put it back wrong, then the gear will not mesh well, and the speedo can cut in and out. This would be bad for the teeth too.
