Need a Jeepers Opinion

Hiya Guys, Heres my question? I want to get my hubby a MIG welder for x-mas. We are rebuilding a CJ7 from the ground up so, there would be some welding of new perches to the frame, body work etc. My question is, I saw a MIG welder that had 100 amps, would that be enough juice to get the job done? I know nothing about welding (yet) and being a woman, I dont wanna get ripped off. I've tried to call welding supply companies in my area for advice but all they want to do is sell me a welder that could probably rebuild the Titanic ! BTW the price of the welder that I had asked about was $325.00. Please email me at snipped-for-privacy@aol.com if ya can help me out. Thanx in advance !

Try rec.crafts.metalworking... The pros and cons of various types of welders have been discussed before, so perhpas a Google Groups search on that group might be appropriate before you ask the question to them...

100 is probably not quite enough for frame perches... and plenty too much for body work. The brand makes a difference... could you tell us the name, or post a link? The price is about right... it is true MIG, using a gas bottle? You'll need to factor the expense of the gas bottle into your pricing... or just run flux core wire, like I do; requires *much* more cleanup work afterward. __ Steve .
