[RFD] a binary newsgroup for jeep+willys

Jul 28, 2003 11 Replies

Just toying with the idea of crossing the netgods of alt.config with a request for a new newsgroup.

The idea would be to provide a place where folks could post pictures, sounds, short vid clips, etc. related to the Jeep (or heck, 4x4) world.

One of the requirements is finding out if there is another news group out there that could suffice. So far my search turned up zilch except for alt.binaries.pictures.autos (nice cars on there by the way)

The proposed group might be something like alt.binaries.pictures.autos.jeep+willys or alt.binaries.autos.makers.jeep+willys although the abamj+w would make a new hierarchy and may not fly.

Thoughts?

The easier to stuff in an existing hierarchy, the more likely news servers are to carry it.

Would the folks at Cox be able to help with all of the trivia, discussion, voting, etc. needed to add the group? And perhaps get their peer ISP's to carry it?

Yea. That's what the FAQ said.. but I'm sure the fine reserved folk on alt.config will help me sort it out. ;) (firmly tongue-in-cheek)

Possibly. I do know one of the cox email abuse guys posts to news.admin.net-abuse.email. He could probably point me to the news server admin.

The FAQ points me to alt.config, but I need to do some more homework (i.e. read other binary group charters) before stepping into the snakepit.

alt.binaries.pictures.autos.4x4 exists.

I post some shots there now and then, but it is pretty much an unused group.

Hmm.. then there isn't a real need for another binary group. Just need to bother the folks at cox.

I'll send in a request.

I have SuperNews, and that group is not listed, I only get ...autos and ... autos.oldtimers

Found "alt.binaries.pictures.autos.4x4, when I did a NG search.

There was only spam messages, when I checked it out.

OK, I just got it added to Earthlink's servers, if anybody wants to post some pictures.

At Earthlink the suggested thing to do is to post the request in their local newsgroup earthlink.support.usenet and wait. And wait.

I don't know anything about cox.net. I would try emailing their customer support and asking (A) if they can get the group added or (B) if not, who to contact.

I'm going to try posting a picture.
