SON OF A B*^#&!!!

The sun caught my grille this morning, by the PS headlight I saw a strange shadow. Kind of looked like a spider web, but the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomache told me it wasn't.

The G**D**N clear is peeling off of the grille.

So, Looks like tomorrow morning, I call the boys down at the dealership, and send it in. Thank goodness for bumper to bumper.

Clear coat, what is that exactly?

Cheers,

Clear coat is the clear plastic sort of stuff that gets scraped off your Jeep the first time you go off road.

That is pretty serious!

Either the clear coat failed, or the paint under it failed and there is no real way to tell which unless they admit a bad paint run like they 'seldom' have to when all the paint peels off piles of them like the older blue or silver Cherokees.

The whole paint job has been compromised somehow and nothing short of sandblasting or somehow stripping it back to bare metal or primer and starting all over again on the whole vehicle will put it right.

I feel for you.

That is the top layer of the paint job. It is a harder layer there to protect the softer paint. Likely way cheaper to do it this way. They can put on soft paint and only need a hard outer shell to get the same life out of it.

Unfortunately when it fails, it is catastrophic. The paint's chemistry has failed to hold it on or the coat was no good, but either way it is a 'very' expensive fix. I have never heard of a fix that was successful either....

It's only on the grille. It appears as though the rim around the headlight was not properly prepped. When I took it to the car wash to blow off some mud and bugs, it must have brken it loose.

It's not hard to fix at all really. It needs to be sanded down below the clear coat, reprimed and then painted and clear coated again.

All of today's paints (as far as I know it's been this way at least ten years) have the clear coat on them. That's why the reds and silvers don't fade as quickly as they used to.

As I said, thank goodness for the 3/36 bumper to bumper. It should be covered. I'll get ahold of them today.

Good luck.

I really hope it is only the one spot and not the whole job.

That's what happened to Sandman's Wrangler IIRC.

Hey Kate,

Sorry for the pain you are going through. I can remember when my Dad was rebuiilding his hot rod, a car I drove when I was a young buck, (73 nova), he had it painted and the damn car never cured even after

30 days. He had to take it back and the little bugger had to be sanded to bare metal. I can remember what my Dad's face looked like after he had invested thousands upon thousands, thinking his bay was f'ed.. Luckily the shop made it right. It still looks phenomenal to this day. You'll be OK, no worries.

BTW, do you still want to the measurements on the warn mount? I had never heard back and was wondering if you were buying from a vendor or were doing the whole bumper from scratch. Take care,

Yea... me too! That would suck on a gigantic scale. specially if it decided to wait until the warranty ran out to go to pot.

Ok, let me tell you THIS

I worked in the body shop industry for more than ten years. I OWNED a successful body shop for five years.

It's spelled ACRYLIC and if you had read my reply in one of the posts above you would have seen where I addressed this issue. It was probably improperly prepped. However, there could have been an issue of contamination between the base coat and clear coat inhibiting adhesion OR any number of reasons why it could have failed.

If your little jab at Mike was intended as a poke in the ribs or some kind of teasing, it didn't read like that on this end. Your smart ass remark pissed me off. It was completely unwarranted and unnecessary.

If you're trying to be helpful, say something constructive you can skip the jabs at other posters.

Mike has ALWAYS been helpful when I ask questions (even when I had my

*shudder* Liberty) and has done a great deal to help educate many people in this group.

The information you gave is pretty much on target and those that may not know about paint will hopefully benefit from it.

The reason I posted this was:

1st: To gripe about it. It's my rig. It's my right, I'll gripe if I want to. 2nd: to follow up with what the results were as far as the warranty repair and quality of service.

Ok, so let's just play nice now.

Oh - did I not get back to you? I'm so sorry.. I wasn't trying to be rude or ungrateful I thought I did.

I've been up to my a$$ in alligators lately.

Hubs says he is going to build me an ARB style bumper with an integrated mount - AND - recessed lights. Whooo hoo! I know just what I want and he's going to make it happen for me.

So now, I'm stuck tapping my toe on the floor waiting impatiently LOL.

I know it will be fine - the paint that is. When I brought my Jeep home I found that it had an issue with the paint on doors. Where the window frame is welded to the door on both sides the paint had cracked and there was a wee little bit of rust. I had them take care of it and they did a great job. I'm scheduled to take it in on Thursday for inspection and setting an appointment to have it fixed. I am SO lucky to have a great dealership to work with. Serra in Jackson TN

I'll bet that your dad was sick, I would have been. I know the guys in the shop must have been too. What a mess to have to clean up. HAH... "Give 'er a lacquer thinner bath boys!"
