Speedo gear, which one?

Hi All,

I have searching all over the net and understand that I would need a

27-tooth gear to get my speedo back to reading correctly. I have 3.07 gearing and am running 265/75R16 tyres, which equate to about 31.7 inches dia. Armed with this, I went to the dealer to get part no: 52067627, which according to the dealer does not exist. The guy was really helpful and we spent about 30 minutes trying to find all the combinations.

Then I came across Tomken, they have a 27-tooth gear, part no: SG27L. Now because of the L, I have a feeling that this would be the long shaft part whereas TJs have the short shaft gears.

After searching again, somebody suggested that Mopar part no: 52068149 actually supersedes 52067627. This should be a 27-tooth speedo gear. I think again this would be a long shaft one.

Can somebody knowledgeable explain to me whether my assumptions are right and the part number 52068149 would be a 27-tooth gear. Secondly, can I just pull the long metal shaft out of the plastic gear and insert the short metal shaft? Or can I just cut the longer shaft to correct length to match the short shaft? Could this work. If this can work, then I can probably get the part from the dealer and make it work rather than import it from the US and pay relatively huge shipping for a cheap part.

Thanks Jeoples, you have guys/gals have been very helpful in the past.

Thanks for the info. It does confirm that I'll need 27-tooth short shaft gear, which is great. But its not a dealership part and Teraflex or Tomken don't have dealers in New Zealand. Somebody suggested that the dealer might have a 27-tooth long shaft gear. My question is, can I interchange the shafts between the one I have and the new one that I buy so that I have a working 27-tooth short shaft?

I have left messages with Teraflex and their retailers in the US, but nobody has come back to me whether they could ship it here. I know shipping would be a lot more that the actual part.

Thanks TW

Thanks Bill for reminding me that I need to regear my diffs!!! But parts cost money and it will have to be paced over a period of time :-)

In the meantime, I am just trying to recalibrate my speedo. I now know I need the 27-tooth short shaft gear, which is great. But its not a dealership part and Teraflex doesn't have dealers in New Zealand. Somebody suggested that the dealer might have a 27-tooth long shaft gear (perhaps a Dana 300 t/case part or some other Dodge/Chrysler). I think that is what the second part number in my message is.

My question is, can I use the plastic component from the new one and interchange the shafts between the one I have and the new one that I buy so that I have a working 27-tooth short shaft? Is this feasible in your infinite wisdom?

Thanks TW

Just now got this reply from one of the Teraflex retailers:

So whats so different about TJ that nobody seems to be making this gear? I can get the 28-tooth gear from the dealer, but that doesn't solve my problem of speedo accuracy.

Thanks. TW

Before I spent money and time on a new gear, I would take a GPS unit and verify my 'real' speed.

I went one size over the factory largest tire on my Cherokee and my speedometer 'then' became exactly right on.

When I put 33's on my CJ7, the speedometer became correct, so things vary...

Bill, thanks for that. It does say that I can buy the long shaft 27-tooth one and then pull the short shaft out of my existing one and transplant it on the new one to make it a 27-tooth short shaft one. The only thing is that this was the only site where it suggests a 26-tooth gear for 32 inch tyres. Everybody else suggests a 27-tooth gear for both 31 and 32 inch tyres.

Mike, thanks. I don't have a GPS, yet. But I have actually timed myself against mile markers on the motorway (or should that be a kilometer marker, we are metric in NZ!). I did five kilometers in exactly three minutes, which gives me a physical speed of 100 kms/hour. My speedo, however, was saying I was doing 90 kms/hour all along. My circumference on the tyres has increased by about 10 percent, so the difference in the actual versus indicated speed seems to be maintaining a similar relationship.

A measured 'mile' is a good way to check it for sure. They are just hard to find in most places.
