TJ Speedo gear issue

I have a 03 Jeep TJ w/ 4.0L and 5 Spd manual. Last fall I literally blew up my transfer case and was lucky enough to get a free one from a buddy's 97 TJ 4CYL 5Spd Manual. I had to swap out the input gear and everything worked out great, but my speedometer was way off. Using the speedo chart here

determined that I needed a 33 tooth gear because of my 31" tires,Well my speedo is still reading about 20% slower than what I amactually doing. I did a lot of research before ripping apart the twotransfers and from what I have found, there is no difference in thegearing between a 6cyl and 4cyl transfer case and the gear differencesare in the axles. Am I missing something somewhere along the line? Iwould really like to get it corrected. Any info would be greatlyappreciated. Thanks!

The four banger would have had four to one axle gears. Your 33 tooth gear would be correct if you had 3.73 ratio, so you've got something higher. Check the numbers that are on a tab bolted between the two bolt holding on the rear differential cover. Or on your build sheet probably still stuck in your front seat springs. So try a 27 tooth:

You are not looking at this properly (as you tend to do anyway). Speedo gears have a range of combos they can use and usually the have two differen drive gears (worm gear on output shaft) and several different driven gear on speedo cable. The PROPER way to fix this is to change the drive gear on output shaft with the one from toasted case. The reason for this is because some jeeps could ship with 3.07 axle ratio (which is a bad cruel joke anyway) and two different drive gear sizes and drive gear combos are need to deal with a 3.07 and a

4.10 properly

This is all you're going to get. Bill has become link-dependent, in addition to his other obvious problems.

He even has links for how to do sex.

I wish a few were heterosexual links, but no.

Anyway, if I say any more, he'll do to me what he does with those horrid goats he has in the garage.

Which is why so many are messed up, I guess.

It gets trannys messed up as well, but you know ALL about that, doncha?

Now get back to your ballet practice and leave this kind of 'dirty-hands' stuff to real men and women.

PS -- How's the pas-de-deux from 'Swan Lake' coming? It's a tough one, especially for a 320-pounder in drag.

Well if your link was correct it would have worked when he used his old speedo gear but it did not because internal gear is in fact different sometimes. You would know this if you ever actually messed with this stuff rather than basing you comments on a link because links are not always right and I have personally seen different internal gears on many models over the years.

I do know that I have 3:73 in the axles becasue that is all that they put in the TJ X. Everything else in the cases were identical except the speedo gear and the input spline count.

FINALLY !!!

Some real meaningful advice from Cooyon Billie: "Don't ask me, I ain't really got a clue, all I have is a bunch of links that anyone can find without feeding my ego."

Well done, Bill. (and you will be when it's candle-harvest time)

I hope this is a new trend towards a modicum of honesty mixed in with your usual bullshit.

Not forwarded anywhere because no-one gives a shit whether (or wether) you live or die -- unless you give them the choice.

It's a thumbs-down from me.
