Starter problems

I recently had a starter rebuilt and now that it is installed, it does not work very well. It did not have any shims originally and it was re-installed the same way. Sometimes it does not engage the flywheel and when it does, it makes rumbling sounds. Also, it makes a scraping sound sometimes, both when it fails to engage and sometimes when it does engage. What could cause it to make scraping sounds? Thanks in advance.

That sounds like the bushing in the nose didn't get replaced or you were too late and your flywheel ring gear is ground down...

You need to pull the starter to see if it's the bushing or gear.

A bad connection on the main cables going to the starter can also not pass enough power to kick it into the flywheel ring gear.

The flywheel is fine. The starter failed by not turning and up until then it worked perfectly so there was no chance to mess it up. The nose bushing sounds dead on because I noticed it was not replaced, figured they found it was in spec and they didn't see the need to change it. That just might be the problem. Thanks a lot.

Just so you know, when the nose bushing went out on my 'under warranty' starter, it took less than a week to kill the ring gear. I let it go until the weekend kind of idea on a daily driver. The engine pull for the new ring gear wasn't under warranty.... (mine is easier to pull the engine on)

Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll take the Jeep to the shop tomorrow and let them worry about it, just as long as they don't want to charge more for work on the starter itself.

It's in the shop now. The mechanic that checked it said it sounded like something internal to the starter and they would have to recheck the rebuild. I'm hoping it will be ready by this afternoon.

It turned out to be a faulty drive lever. This is what pushes the drive gear to the flywheel ring gear when the solenoid is energized. Thanks for your help.

It's working fine now. I was lucky the ring gear was not harmed.

Thanks
