Starting trouble...

I'm not really starting trouble. But I do have a question about my Jeep starting.

1999 Cherokee Sport Limited I6 4.0L

When turning the key to start the motor, about half way through the "start" process with the engine turning over, the whole process will "die" for a split second (the engine will whirl to a sudden stop) then it will kick back in and start fine. Any ideas?

Thanks!!!

Maybe the battery's getting old?

That implies a bad main connection to me. The high amp draw causes a failure, then it arcs over and keeps going. This will stop working very soon.

I would be having the hood open when starting and do it a couple times then get out and feel all the battery wire connections. The one you find hot is the bad connection. Warning! 'Feel' them easy, they 'can' be hot enough to burn you.

If one main cable end is corroded, all the main ones need cleaning on both ends.

Thank you all for your replies.

The battery is new, about 2 months old. I will check the wiring.

Bill, when you say "pre-ignition", can you elaborate? I'm running 87 octane. The motor has 84K miles, and it seems to be running a tiny bit rough (when idling) and seems to smoke a bit from the exhaust.

I put a new distributor core in her a few months ago. The core had no adjustment to it, other than a tiny bit of slop in the hold down bolt and in the plastic cap. I guess I could loosen up the core and cap and bias the slop in one direction or the other, picking up about one degree or so. If you think this may help, which direction (CW or CCW) would I turn the core/cap?

Thank you!

That is computer controlled, you cannot adjust anything. That bit of slop makes no matter.

Bill is thinking the old engines I think.
