My 95 Jeep Cherokee Sport turns off at random times! Help!

Dec 05, 2003 5 Replies

My 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4.0L, 4WD, inline V6, will stall after the engine gets warm. 95% of the time it will start up again after a minute or two. I have a new distributor, plugs and plug wires and everything is getting fire. If anyone has any thoughts I would appreciate it.

Dirty connection on the CPS.

The connection is just above the exhaust manifold on the drivers side behind the throttle body.

Pull it open and clean the contacts with a contact cleaner or WD40.

Heat affects bad connections and the CPS is only passing a computer signal, not a power signal so it is really sensitive to the slightest corrosion.

I dunno about your mechanical problem, but where can I get me one of those inline V6s? Sounds way cool.

Mike Romain did pass the time by typing:

Sometimes. :/ That is where it is supposed to be on my 93 but actually the little bugger is hiding back by #6 sparkplug.

Check the CrankshaftPositionSensor and if that is not it, see if any fault codes appear, then hire an engine surgeon to turn that V6 back into the a straight six before it twists the crank in half.
