I have a 4.2 crank that has already been turned. I also have the pistons (.030 over) that were going to go into my CJ8. Question is; will the pistons that I have for the 4.2 work in a 4.0 block provided the block is bored to match the pistons?

Keep the 4.2 con rods, they're shorter than the 4.0 con rods by .250 or so IIRC... don't want to mash your valves! Verify this before taking my word on it.

No, they are too small already. There is a Strokers group on Yahoo for 4.0s that's a good source of info. Pistons are somewhat of an issue with this conversion.

I spoke with Hesco today. It seems (from them) I need to use 4.0 rods and have them machined down to fit. From what I have read, I thought I could use the rods with no mods to them.
