Tires, wheels and backspacing

Dec 16, 2003 12 Replies

I know this has been asked multiple times and I've searched through this NG to try to find an answer. Unfortunately I found multiple answers and I'm not sure which ones are most accurate.

I have an '01 TJ and am planning to install a 2" RE Budget Boost along with a 1" body lift. Once I get that in place, I'll be getting new wheels and tires. I'm looking at getting 32" MTs (haven't decided on specific brand yet) on 15" AR757s or the US Wheel equivalent. I'm trying to determine how much backspacing I need on my new wheels.

I've seen responses saying that it should work with stock backspacing (seem to recall that this is 5") and others that say you need 4" or so. I really don't want the wheels sticking out further than necessary.

Any help would be appreciated.

Why not use the factory rims?

I really like the thought of having steel wheels as opposed to the aluminum ones I have now. While the aluminum ones are still in good shape, I found someone to buy them which almost completely finances my new tires and wheels. I know the steel vs. aluminum arguement has been played out a few times here as well, but I'm leaning toward the steel since they're easier to bend back into shape if they're banged into something and much cheaper to replace.

By the way... I mistyped the type of wheel below... actually wanting the AR

767s.

Several responses on previous posts said that you needed less than stock backspacing to fit 32X11.50s without rubbing with articulation and/or full turn. I know the turning can be resolved by some washers under the steering stops, but I'm mostly concerned with articulation.

Also... I posted the original message from another computer where I had access to the NG through google & my Yahoo ID, hence the different posting name.

Ya, I think I was the one that said they wouldn't fit without rubbing. But then again, some were saying that they would hehehehe. So heck if I know... I'd still like someone to step in who has actually run

It looks like there are multiple choices between 3.5" and 5". Seem to be in strange increments.... .5", .25" in some cases. Surely someone else is running 32s on similar wheels and can tell me the BS they have and how it works.

I'm looking at the 15X8 767s.

There is a tradeoff with each.

If you don't like extended flares nor want the "roller skater" look (wheels sticking way the hell out from underneath the wheel wells), then go with the

5" backspacing. This is close to the 5.5" stock wheels, but with this configuration & wider tires, expect to lose a little turning radius (the tradeoff). With the 3.5s, you'll not lose the turning radius, but tires will stick out from under the flares more noticeably (tradeoff).

I personally prefer to give up a little turning radius to keep the tires tucked in tighter, but that's just me. I ran a set of 15x8, 5"BS Centerline heavy billet wheels w/ 33x12.5s for several years. (by the way, these wheels are excellent and sitting in my garage waiting for a new owner -- I'd still be using them but I'm now using a different bolt pattern -- no more 5x4.5).

Also, trading in the stock wheels for a set of 15x8s will give the option of stepping up to a wider tire in the future, if you so choose (33x12.5,

35x12.5, etc).

Yeah... I really don't want the tires sticking way outside the fenders. Sounds like I need to consider 4 - 5" BS.

I'll keep doing some digging and see if anyone's running 5" with 32X11.50s and having any problems.

I appreciate the responses guys!

Alrighty... ordered by 2" RE Budget Boost today and am trying to finalize my wheel/tire purchase. Decided to stick w/ 31s for various reasons and have what I think is a good quote on some Bridgestone Dueler AT REVOs. I currently have the stock GSAs which are HORRIBLE in just about everything except dry pavement.

Anyway... I'm trying to decide on the backspacing I need on the AR767s I'm going to mount these on. Looks like stock is between 5.25 & 5.5", but American Racing recommends 4" for 31s. I really don't want these things sticking out too far, but want enough offset to avoid any rubbing problems. As I understand it, 31s should fit on the stock wheels with a washer or two under the steering stops so I can probably stick close to 5" of BS as long as I don't plan on going bigger with the tires on those wheels.

Is anyone else here running 31s on anything but stock rims? Can you recall what your backspacing and offset figures are? Would love to see some pics of your setup if you could post a link.

I'd go between 4.5" and 5" inclusive on the backspacing for 31x10.50s.

That's about what I was thinking, but the more I searched and read, the more confusing it all got. Thank you!
