Same with our '93 ZJ. Don't tow in overdrive.

Mm, better check that against elapsed distance and fuel usage, with the price of fuel the way it is. Sometimes you are better off driving a little slower and keeping it in drive. Aerodynamics and power curves, you know.

'Both' of my Jeeps owners manuals say not to use OD no matter if a standard or auto. On the standard, that would be 5th gear.

86/00 CJ7 Laredo, 33x9.5 BFG Muds, 'glass nose to tail > Main reason to not tow in OD is that the tranny tends to 'hunt' (shiftsBoth my WJ and TJ manuals say do not tow in OD, WJ auto TJ 5-speed. Heck I tow a 6x10 v- nose trailer with two sportsters with my TJ it cruises right nice at 6o mph in 4th.

Sage advice from someone who a couple of days ago was telling someone that gas and used oil made excellent weed killer. Guess which crime would get the bigger fine?
Just curious here....
Is there /anyone/ on this planet that is NOT jealous of you and your sheer wonderfulness and supersized 320+ pound surfing body? (Fat floats in water, ya know.....)
Whale meat again.
Of course not.
I do think that YOU are stupid enough, though. That's why you get trapped so very often.
Or maybe you're just senile.
A sixpack of one, half-a-dozen pills of the other; no diff.
Cheers, Llewdellen.
I will definitely /not/ say 'bottoms up' around you.....
He couldn't get his bottom up if he wanted.

Aw, stuck again, is he?
Oh well, Nancy will scrape him off and hose him down again....
(That's why his grandkids call him 'grandpoop'. As they wait for the Will to be read.)

I recently completed a 2,000 mile trip in a 2001 Cherokee Sport (4.0 liter, automatic, I believe a Cherokee is an XJ?) pulling a nine foot pop-up from an altitude of 1,200 feet to over 8,000 MSL. The vehicle did just fine in "D" on the level, but I had to down shift quite a bit when going up hill and down. I found that for running around in the mountains, 3rd seems to work best if you can maintain 35 MPH or better. Once in the mountains I used it almost exclusively, save for those times I spent under 35, and then it was down into 1-2.
Coming down the mountains (tight, winding S-turns) required almost continuous use of 1-2 to save on brakes. The Cherokee picked up speed very quickly, pushed by the 1200 lb. trailer. I initially relied on brakes alone, but after smelling them, use of 1-2 became constant, despite the slower speed. I just pulled into turn-offs whenever I got a line of folks behind me. It takes more time, but it saves on brakes and prevents their failure.
And, for what it's worth, I installed a new set of Bosch platinum plugs in the Cherokee and saw my gas mileage increase 3-5 MPG, even while pulling the trailer in the mountains.
Hope this helps.
