I tow a pop-up behind my TJ and use overdrive (5th gear) most of the time. I only upshift when there's a slight grade or the engine acts like it's starting to lug a bit. Your XJ's 4.0L is a real torque-monster so until you get onto a grade, it should be fine in OD.
