2.5TD honing/rebore/crank bearings

What do the team think?

Marge (2.5TD, 150k Miles) is, like many gals her age, indulging a little too much in nasty personal habits. Specifically, she's taken up smoking a bit too enthusiastically for my taste, belching clouds in the morning, and blow-by, pushing oil back up into the air filter (the worst bit of this is the smell through the heater!).

I know this is largely worn rings/liners, and that it's a relatively simple job to whip off the head/sump and re-hone/rebore in situ, replacing crank bearings at the same time. The engine's running well otherwise, although I think it's a little down on power, so this is more maintenance than repair.

I've found an engineer that will do it (comes highly recommended and says he's done many Landys in the past), but the shock was the price -

700-1000 depending on Marge needing just honing, or an actual rebore.

I've a fortnight coming up soon when I won't need her services, so it's an ideal time to get the job done - no inconvenience to me or time pressure on the workshop. So is it worth doing, or should I look around for (say) a TDI unit instead? Oh, and if I do go for it, what do the team think about the price?

Simonm.

Hi Simon,

Do the whole job, or just the rebore ? The rebore on my 200Tdi project just cost me 80 quid.

Whole job - take off heads & sump, strip engine as needed, rebore/hone rebuild with new bottom-end bearings. 700 if hone, 1000 if rebore.

I know there's a fair bit of work, albeit not too difficult, but I don't have the workshop space (height) to take the engine out myself.

700 sounds fair enough then, but the rebore I got was done with a rig that can be used in-situ in the engine bay - might be worth shopping around.

Thanks, I think you're right!

Did you notice a big improvement afterwards , or was the original problem bad enough that a re-bore was unavoidable anyway?

I'm just starting to put it back together again - but BOY did it need a rebore. The middle two pots were badly scored, by the failure of the edges of the pistons, and not the rings, so what happened there we don't know.

Isn't that indicative of a poor spray pattern on the injectors causing heat in particular areas of the piston. I've seen pistons with holes burnt straight through them but not heard (yet) of it affecting just the outer edge.

It's not exactly uncommon for the whole piston crown to "melt"

- whatever one may think about these engines, they keep going under the most amazing circumstances.

Can the injectors on the 200Tdi be serviced ? Otherwise, RICHARD I need some more damned parts!

If you've got a local diesel parts specialist type, take 'em in and get 'em checked/rebuilt. Most injectors can be serviced, ISTR.
